degrees F. in Dakotas & Minnesota to 120 degrees F. in
Southern Missouri.
 The rainfall in the Midwest can very as much as 50 in. in
Northwestern Missouri to 13 in. in Western North Dakota.
What effect does climate have on settlement patterns in
the region?
 Climate has a big effect on settlement because the weather
in the Midwest is not predictable. For example, right now
in Wisconsin it’s said to be winter but it goes up to 40-50
degrees, while other days might be below zero. Some
people don’t like the cold weather, so they might not live
here. The weather and the climate can vary throughout the
whole year.

 There is no universal healthcare or a system of socialized
medicine in the Midwest and United States
 In a recent study at Harvard University states that because some
people don’t have healthcare benefits their medical bills are the
leading cost of bankruptcy in the United States which obviously
includes the Midwest Region.
 -Public Debt
 So many people are in debt and don’t have the money to pay
their bills
 The public debt is over 7 million dollars
How has climate affected the settlement of the region?
 Climate has a big effect on settlement because the weather
in the Midwest is not predictable. For example, right now
in Wisconsin it’s said to be winter but it goes up to 40-50
degrees, while other days might be below zero. Some
people don’t like the cold weather, so they might not live
here. The weather and the climate can vary throughout the
whole year.
How has pollution affected the lives of the people in the
region?
 In the Midwest we have the Great Lakes, and pollution in
the great lakes might affect some of the people here. Who
would want to live by a nasty rotten lake? So it’s important
to keep the environment clean and healthy for more people
to live in the Midwest.
Why do people live in certain areas in this region?
 Most people live in the city because you have a lot of resources
wherever you go unlike the countryside down south where you
don’t have has much if you live in the middle of nowhere
 Even if there might be small cities, the whole community is
always together, and lots of people like having many people by
their side, and these kinds of communities are sure to be found
in the Midwest

What might happen if one or more of the major
transportation routes within the region were
interrupted?
 Without one of the major transportation routes it
would be very difficult for people to drive places, or
maybe even when shipping/transporting goods
 you would have to problem solve, if one of the
highways were took out, then instead of going on that
you would go around, so I guess it would just take
more time to get to your destination
 It just makes things more difficult

 Sears Tower
 Mt. Rushmore
 St. Louis Arc
 National Parks
Unique Characteristics in This Region
 The great lakes: there is a tall story that said that there
was once a man named Paul Bunyan and he had an Ox
named Babe, so the great lakes are said to be the
footprints of him, when he was on a journey and there
was a blizzard so all of the little lakes and the great
lakes are from him
