Both mean independence, but autonomy refers to a country and freedom refers to an
individual person
Both imply that the people share a relationship; compatriots are from the same country,
while friends have a relationship through personal choice regardless of citizenship.
Both suggest formation of a whole, but assembled gives a stronger sense of being
created from individual parts.
Both denote attention to detail, but impeccable has a stronger connotation of perfection.
Both mean very small, but imperceptible means so small it cannot be detected, while
slight is not necessarily difficult to detect.
A parade IS a succession, but succession can be used more broadly and abstractly.
Assail can also mean to cause trouble or to bother someone, but its connotation is that of

Emphasis is in the delivery – using bold words or broad gestures while stating the point.
To concede is to admit defeat or surrender; to quit is to stop before defeat is certain.
To commemorate means to do something that shows that you remember – an outward
gesture or proof of memory.


Mr. Pirzada gives Lilia candy, which she treasures and saves in a box that is the only piece of her
grandmother that she has. She knows that these gifts are special and that they are given to her be
cause of Mr. Pirzada’s desire to connect with her as he misses his own children.
Lilia realizes that Mr. Pirzada’s watch helps him stay connected to his real life and family in Dacca.
The watch is set 11 hours ahead – do Dacca time. (lines 225-232)
Mr. Pirzada feels protective of Lilia and wants to accompany her on Halloween to keep her safe
because he doesn’t know if it’s safe for her to go alone. (lines 451-460). Lilia understands that Mr.
Pirzada’s desire to protect her is about his fear for his family living in a dangerous part of the world.
Lilia begins to learn more and more about the conflict and begins to compare her life to the lives of
people in war-torn Pakistan. She realizes how little she and her community understand about the
civil war in Pakistan, and she begins developing a broader, more mature outlook on the world and
empathy for others.
The candy symbolizes Mr. Pirzada’s attempt to connect to Lilia because he cannot reach out to his
own daughters. His fez represents his homeland and his “foreignness” in Lilia’s world. The watch
represents his desire to connect with live in Dacca and his family.
One possible theme is that growing up means learning to appreciate other people’s experiences. As
Lilia learns more about Mr. Pirzada’s fears and sacrifices, she becomes less self-centered and wants
“above all, to console Mr. Pirzada”.
Lilia’s ritual of eating candy and saying a prayer for Mr. Pirzada’s family ends when she knows they
are safe and he has been reunited with them.

