Lord of the Flies, Vocabulary: Chapters 7-9
1. obtuse (adj.): not quick or alert in perception, feeling, or intellect; not sensitive or
observant; dull.
2. brandishing (v.): waving about in a threatening or menacing manner
3. glowered (v.): to look angrily
4. sage (adj.): wise through reflection and experience; characterized by using good judgment
and wisdom
5. loiter (v.): dawdle; to remain somewhere for no obvious reason; to hang around and lag
behind
6. indignant (adj.): filled with anger aroused by something unjust, unworthy, or mean
7. demure (adj.): modest; reserved
8. fervor (n.): intensity; passion
9. cynical (adj.): distrustful of human nature and motives; pessimistic
10. vexed (v.): irritated; annoyed; frustrated
11. corpulent (adj.): with a large, bulky body; obese
12. succulent (adj.): juicy and moist
13. festoon (n. or v.): a chain or strip hanging between two points
14. sauntered (v.): strolled; walked in a leisurely or idly manner
15. surged (v.): rolled forward like a wave
Directions: Write a sentence for each of the 15 vocabulary words. Remember:
1. Use the first four lines of paper for your 4-line header.
2. Title your sentences with enough information to specifically identify the assignment.
3. Write your last name and the page number in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
4. Number your sentences and identify the vocabulary word at the beginning of each sentence.
5. Underline or highlight the vocabulary word within the actual sentence.
6. You may only use the word “The” to start three of your sentences; four or more occurrences
equals -1 point.
