Study Guide for Meiosis Quiz 1

(the quiz will be between 12 and 18 questions, given Friday 1/31)

1. Make sure you know the definitions of the following words:

(I am not going to ask any direct vocabulary questions, but you need to know the meaning of these words)

Parent cell

Daughter cell

Gamete/sex cell

Somatic cell

Haploid (n)

Diploid (2n)

Chromosomes

Alleles

Homologous chromosomes

Sister chromatids

Tetrad

Chromosome

Fertilization

Zygote

Mitosis

Meiosis

Karyotype

Heredity

Genetics

Trait

Probability

Punnett Square

Homozygous

Heterozygous

Genotype

Phenotype

Dominant

Recessive

2. You need to be able to look at a karyotype and tell me:

-the gender of the person

-whether or not they have extra or missing chromosomes

3. Know the major differences between mitosis and meiosis:

-what types of cells are produced by each process

-how many cells are produced from one parent cell

-how many cell divisions are in each process

-how many pairs of chromosomes are in the daughter cells after each process

-where in the body do these processes happen

4. You need to know these meiosis diagrams:

-Know how many chromosomes are at each stage

-know the difference between an I-shaped (or rod-shaped) chromosome and an X-shaped chromosome

-track which chromatid ends up in which gamete

-be able to fill in the blank diagram with the number of chromosomes (I will give you the number of chromosomes in at lease one of the cells)

5. Be able to describe what happens when chromosomes cross over.

6. There will not be any Punnett squares on this quiz, but you will need to recognize genotypes by their combinations of letters, and you will need to tell me whether a genotype is homozygous dominant, homozygous recessive, or heterozygous.

7. Know what phenotype will be present when given a genotype, and know possible genotypes when given a phenotype.

Study Tips

-Study in a quiet place if you can. If you must listen to music, listen to instrumental music only (music with no words)

-USE YOUR NOTES. If you are missing any words, check the PowerPoint presentations on the Stern MASS website http://www.sternmass.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=400442&type=u

-The act of writing helps you learn and remember. If you are struggling with something, get out a separate piece of paper and write it out.
