INTERMEDIATE BAND: PRACTICE AT HOME EVERY DAY
Your band student must practice at home everyday in order to be successful in
band. It’s OK to miss a day here and there, but students who don’t practice regularly
will fall behind, become frustrated, and want to quit. You will want your student to
stick with music because numerous scientific studies have shown that the study of
music enhances the brain, improves memory, and raises student’s test scores in
math and language arts. Band class is the time to apply what the students have
been practicing at home, and to learn to play with a group. Students who only play
their instrument at school will not succeed.
GRADES
Home practice determines 50% of the grade. Practice 30 minutes a day for an A+.
PRACTICE CALENDARS are due on the first of every month for 50% of the band grade.
Students are to fill in time practiced on the calendar daily. Do not wait until the end of the
month and try to remember. Keep the Practice Calendar in your music binder. Incomplete
Practice Calendars will not be accepted! Vacation days from school do not excuse students
from practicing (students should still practice over Winter Break for example). This card
must be signed by a parent/caregiver. The grading scale already has sick days built in, but
students may need to practice a little extra after being ill to earn an A+. On days with band
performances outside of the regular school hours, 60 minutes may be counted on the
Practice Calendar. STUDENT’S MONTHLY LETTER GRADE WILL BE LOWERED ONE FULL
LEVEL (From A to B etc.) FOR EACH WEEK THE PRACTICE CALENDAR IS LATE! Any
intentional deception reported on the practice calendar will result in an automatic grade of
“F”. Practice calendars submitted electronically after the grading period due date will receive
an additional 10 point penalty. Practice calendars are not required for the months of August
and June.
Tests determine 25% of the grade. There are three competition music tests. Each student
has one month to complete each test. These tests will take place in the months of February,
March, and April. Students may volunteer to retake any music test as many times as it
takes to pass during class. Students must test off all their scales or cadences to move up to
Advanced Band. It is the student’s responsibility to sign up to be tested.
PERFORMANCES DETERMINE 25% OF THE GRADE
Performances are mandatory! Mr. Beck will only consider parent notes turned in by
August 29th, 2014 requesting to miss any performance of the school year. If an illness
or emergency occurs which prevents the band student from attending the performance,
please send in a detailed note from the doctor upon return. Performance permission slips
receive 100 to 500 points each. Unexcused absences receive a 500 point penalty, and
require a 10 page typed report as a make-up assignment. If transportation to a performance
is a problem, please notify Mr. Beck in advance so he can make arrangements for a ride.
Missing a performance because of not having a ride is excused only if Mr. Beck was notified 3
days in advance and was unable to solve the ride problem. Call Mr. Beck at 760-803-2180
for help with a ride. Please put these performances on the family calendar:

instrument says you can. Put your name on your instrument case.
D. Do not leave your instrument on the floor in the storage rooms. Put in on the shelf.
E. No gum, food, or soft drinks allowed in the band room during class time. Water only.
F. When the director cuts off the band, students are to stop playing and quietly listen for
directions immediately.
G. Never point your instrument at someone’s ear or head.
H. Don’t get up in the middle of a song unless it is an emergency.
I. Don’t stop practicing, prepare to leave or put anything away until the teacher says to,
regardless of the time.
J. Please don’t wipe the front board with your fingers to partially erase anything.
K. Practice rooms may only be used with permission from the teacher.
L. 5 demerits plus the repair bill for any objects thrown inside an instrument, or
any destructive behavior towards band equipment. (If it is already broken a little bit,
don’t do anything to make it worse. Report it to the teacher immediately).
M. Only students in band or choir, or planning to join are allowed in the band room.
O. Students must begin to get their instruments, music, and pencils ready immediately
when class starts and go to their assigned seats. No standing
around talking, or hanging around in practice/storage rooms.
P. Never take apart any drum equipment in any way without permission from Mr. Beck.
O. Students may not sign their parents’ name on the practice cards.
P. . A students who is slightly ill, but well enough to go to school should still bring his
or her instrument and music and finger along.
Q. The mouthpiece disinfectant spray may never be played with or squirted at a
person. Always point the sprayer down and squirt once at your mouthpiece. The
mouthpiece disinfectant spray is only for people who share mouthpieces.
Turn in your permission slips early to get the maximum number of points
All slips, forms, and permission slips come with a due date. Papers turned in after the
due date will lose points for every day late. This syllabus is due before August 28h for 500
points. 100 points will be subtracted per week late.
EFFORT GRADES
Instruments must be taken home every day to practice. Students should never
leave their instrument at school overnight. A student loses one point each time their only
instrument is left at school overnight. An instrument left over the weekend for example
would be a loss of three points (one point for each night the instrument is at school). The
school office is open until 4:00 PM or later (760-751-4295). The school custodian is on
campus until 10:00 PM every night. Find him and he will open the band room for you.
During a vacation call Mr. Beck to pick up an instrument left at school: 760-803-2180. All
instrument cases must have the students name clearly marked.
The necessary materials for class each day are the instrument, music binder, and pencil
out on the music stand. Students who repeatedly forget their materials will lose points. A
student who is slightly ill, but well enough to go to school should still bring his or her
instrument and music to school and finger along.
INSTRUMENT STORAGE ROOMS: DAY USE ONLY!
Students may use the instrument storage rooms during the school day at their own risk.
Reasonable supervision is kept on the storage rooms, but it is impossible to watch every
instrument at all times. All students must have their name clearly marked somewhere on
their instrument case. Students who touch any instrument in any way that is not assigned
to them will be disciplined severely. Instruments may not be left in the storage rooms
overnight unless special arrangements have been made for the student to have another
instrument at home to practice on.
All Band students must complete and return this bottom portion before August 28th
for 500 points. 100 points will be subtracted per week late.
