But……… Do all animals rely on plants for food? Actually they do. Lets look at a simple food chain. Grass – Zebra – Lion The Lion would not be alive to eat the Zebra if it wasn’t for the Zebra eating the grass. What is needed for photosynthesis to occur? Light is needed for photosynthesis to occur. Where does photosynthesis occur? Stage 1 Photosynthesis occurs in the leaves of a plant. Sunlight is captured by the chloroplast in the leaves. Where does photosynthesis occur? Stage 2 Water enters the plants through the roots Carbon Dioxide enters the plants through Stomata Stomata = small openings on the leaves The sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide mix and create Glucose Photosynthesis Equation Besides food how does photosynthesis help us? During the process of photosynthesis, oxygen is produced. We use this oxygen to breathe. Now What Respiration is the process by which cells obtain energy from glucose. All living things need continuous energy so all cells carry out respiration continuously. 2 stages of respiration Stage 1 takes place in the Cytoplasm. glucose is broken down without any oxygen and a small amount of energy is created. Stage 2 Takes place in the mitochondria Oxygen mixes with these molecules to create more energy.
