Although satire is usually witty, and often very funny, the purpose of satire is not 'just' humor but criticism of an individual or a group. *Satire cheat sheet found here. 5 TECHNIQUES OF SATIRE* 1) Exaggeration: To represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen. 2) Irony A literary device that exploits a reader’s expectations. Irony occurs when what is expected turns out to be quite different from what actually happens. 3. Understatement • The representation of something as smaller or less significant than it really is; the opposite of exaggeration. 4) Reversal: To present the opposite of the normal order. 5) Parody: To imitate the techniques / style of some person, place, or thing in order to ridicule the original.
