Converting Fractions to Decimals
To convert a fraction to a decimal, simply divide the numerator by the denominator.
Ex.
2

5
2 divided by 5 = .4
1

2
1 divided by 2 = .5
*** If you have a mixed number, convert to an improper fraction, then follow the steps
listed above.
Converting Decimals to Percents
To convert a decimal to a percent, simply multiply the decimal by 100.
Ex.
3.15  (3.15 * 100) = 315%
.05  (.05 * 100) = 5%
Converting Percents to Decimals
To convert a percent to a decimal, simply divide the percent by 100.
Ex.
54%  54/100 == .54
150%  150/100 = 1.5
Decimals to Fractions
When writing decimals as fractions or mixed #s, read aloud and state the place value of
the last digit. Write the mixed number or fraction that you stated.
Ex. 3.15- Three and fifteen hundredths  3
.04  Four hundredths 
15
100
4
100
5.124  Five and one hundred twenty-four thousandths  5
124
1000
Simplifying Fractions
1. Find the common factor that can be divided into the numerator (N) and
denominator (D).
2. Divide the N and D by this factor.
3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 until the common factor for the N & D is one.
*** If you have difficulty finding a factor, use divisibility tests or divide the smaller
number into the larger number.
Writing Fractions as Decimals
Method 1
Divide Numerator by the Denominator.
Ex. 5  5 divided by 4 = 1.25
4
8  8 divided by 2 = 4
2
Method 2
If the denominator is a factor of 10, 100, or 1,000, then rename the fraction.
Read out loud and write as a decimal. ( Using Place Value)
Ex. 2
5
= 4
10 
4
16
25 = 100
.4
 .16
