Lincoln School H.S.A. Meeting Minutes April 16, 2015
President Missy Nappi called the meeting to order at 7:28pm. A motion was made to
approve the minutes from the March meeting. The minutes were approved.
Principal’s Report – Mr. Geher
1. Day at the Piazza – Saturday, April 18th
2. Book Fair – another successful year
3. Beginner wind and percussion and beginner string recitals
4. PARCC testing
5. Jump Rope for Heart – always a fun and successful event
6. Personnel – one open position for the 2015-2016 school year. The current 2nd
grade will have 3 sections again next year.
7. 5th grade dioramas

Teacher Representative Report – Mr. Geher


Kindergarten – Students are writing several ‘How To’ stories and using their word
building skills as they add many new words and phrases to their writing. They are
planning a reception for some time in May for parents to hear their stories. They
are working on the Soil/Dirt unit in Science. They will be planting seeds. They
are starting to receive mail/photos from their traveling ‘Felix’.
First Grade – Our first graders are busy writing and reading nonfiction texts.
They are writing All About books on self-selected topics. If you visit the
classrooms, you will see their Garden in a Glove projects in the germination






stage. After learning about the life cycle of plants they are ready to observe and
record their findings in their plant science journals.
Second Grade – The 2nd graders are very busy. In Math, they completed a unit on
money and are starting to work on data analysis. In Science, they are busy
learning about sound and doing various experiments to explore how vibrations
cause sound and how the anatomy of the ear works. In Social Studies, the
children have been learning about the Founding Fathers. They are looking
forward to their field trip on April 10th to the Newark Museum.
Third Grade – Students are busy reading and writing across genres. They are
currently reading historical fiction books. In writing, students are drafting
realistic fiction stories. They are very excited for the 3rd Grade Annual Bike
Rodeo on April 24th.
Fourth Grade – The students are busy reading the novels George Washington’s
Socks and George Washington’s Spy. They are looking forward to meeting Elvira
Woodruff during her author visit to Lincoln School. The students are currently
learning about the common core concepts of Geometry, perimeter and area in
Math class.
Fifth Grade – Students are involved in their Colonial Times studies. They have
been busy with different Colonial Times projects (some are on display at the
Caldwell Public Library). To gain more knowledge and background information
about life during Colonial Times, the students are reading the novel The Witch of
Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Spears.
Library – Everyone is extremely excited for Elvira Woodruff’s visit on Friday,
April 17th. They are also looking forward to participating for the 4th year in
National Poem in Your Pocket Day which will be held on April 30th.
K Kid News – They have just mailed out their Project Gratitude Cards. Their
next project will be collecting items for the food pantry. K-Kids would like to
thank the Lincoln School HSA for their ongoing support.

 Cash-on-Hand is $33,157.19
 Bank Balance is $37,208.08
Board of Education Report
 Currently getting bids for security upgrades in schools
H.S.A. League Report
 Next meeting will be Tuesday, May 19th followed by 2015/2016 calendar meeting
 Wizards sold 850 tickets in less than 2 weeks/$12,000 raised. Possibly doing
another game in the Fall.
 April 20th – Scholarship will decide how many scholarships they are able to give
out this year (generally 6 or 7)
 Shred event is May 2nd from 10am-2pm





May 16th – 5K event. There will be breakfast items, music, coffee, etc. Banner
will be displayed across Bloomfield Avenue.
Schools will be closed on Friday, May 22nd and Tuesday, May 26th to allow for
unused snow days.
New policies are in place regarding advertising and fund-raising. They will be
available on the website.
Working on getting a District Family Night in the Fall. No homework will be
assigned, no practices, etc. A chance to re-connect with the family and support
local businesses.
Schools will be receiving $4000.00 to assist with the Cultural Arts budget.
Old Business

New Business
 Thank you to Tina Seidler and Patrese Lattimer for an outstanding Book Fair. It
was a wonderful and organized event. The kids loved picking out their books and
each student received a free book ($10 value) from the HSA.
 Thank you to Mrs. Ciesla for a successful Jump Rope for Heart. 88 3rd, 4th, and
5th grade students participated. This event keeps our students active and serves as
a fundraiser for the American Heart Association, raising over $3,000.00 this year.
 HSA positions are still open. An email was sent out last week. Please let Missy
Nappi know if you are interested. Open positions are: One (Assistant) Class
Parent Position, Two Fundraising Positions, One to Two Hospitality Positions,
One Playground Position, One Publicity Position, One Special Projects Position,
and One USA Day Position (Assistant).
Committee Reports
 Major Spring Fundraiser – a “Day at the Piazza” is almost here!!! Last major push
for 50/50 tickets and for volunteers to help day of (also supplies needed). Please
tell your friends and family to come and support. The committee has been
tirelessly working for many months. T-shirt sale on Friday during lunch.
 Book Fair Committee would like to thank all volunteers and shoppers.
 Author Visit on Friday, April 17th
 Family Fun Night on Friday, May 8th
 USA Day is Tuesday, May 20th. 4th and 5th graders received information on how
to invite a Veteran to celebrate with Lincoln School.
 Bike Rodeo is scheduled for April 24th. Sign-up Genius was sent out for parent
volunteers.
 Spring Plant Sale – information was posted on the Virtual Backpack. Flyers will
go home this Friday in folders and are due back next Friday.
 Blue Book Contest – art contest where students can submit artwork to be included
in next year’s Blue Book.
All Others

Teacher Appreciation Luncheon – June 2nd. Teachers will receive gift cards to
Staples, as well as, have a nice lunch.
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting and the meeting was adjourned at 8:19pm.
Next Meeting: Wednesday, May 15th at 7:15pm.
