Rocks Study Guide!!!
THE ROCK CYCLE
Igneous Rocks
1st is Magma/lava
Sedimentary Rocks
Metamorphic Rocks
Through weathering a rock is
Broken into Sediments/pieces
Foliated
INtrusive
Coarse-Grained
Cools slowly
Formed inside
Earth.
Formed by magma
EXtrusive
Fine-grained
Cools fast/rapid
Formed outside
Earth.
Formed by lava
Foliated appears
To have bands
Clastic
cemented/glued
Together from
rock fragments
Chemical
Organic
Crystallized out
of a solution To
become a rock
Formed from remains
Of plants & animals
(ex. Coal)
Nonfoliated
No appearance
of bands
Important vocabulary to know!!!
Strata – layers of rock (think of a cake)
Stratification – process where sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers (like a cake)
Rock A naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals or organic matter
How does sedimentary rock form???
1st Weathering – rock is broken into small pieces by (wind, rain, ice,…)
2nd Erosion – Water or wind carries the pieces away
3rd Deposition – pieces are deposited somewhere else (dropped off)
4th Compaction – years go by & the pieces are packed on topped of each
other/weighted
5th Cementation – minerals slowly dissolve, seep into spaces and act like
pieces together to make a bigger rock.
6th Sediment – rock and mineral fragments/pieces
glue/cement, glue the
