The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss, is an example of a social commentary about the impacts, or externalities, of unregulated industry. At the time of its publication (1971) the modern environment movement, in which average Americans sought to improve the environment and limit pollution by consumers and industry, had gained traction. For example, landmark pieces of environmental legislation such as the Clean Air Act (1963) and the Water Quality Act (1965) were passed and the Environmental Protection Agency (1970) and Earth Day (1970) were created. What is required of your creative social commentary? 1. Identify the externality that you are focusing on. 2. Research your topic (whatever externality you choose to do your commentary on) a. Examples of types of externalities: Air pollution Noise from Airports or other industries Health risk to others from big industries Cell Phones - Talking and Texting while driving This is just a short list of examples. You decide on something that is interesting to you and create a commentary similar to the Lorax. Research must be sited using MLA style. Due on Friday, December 18.
