NOTE: Dylan Hendzel and Jenna Hornblad will be acolytes (Dylan is replacing Jake Krueger, who will be reading first) PRELUDE Sue Stodola WELCOME & NEWS OF THE CHURCH OPENING SCRIPTURE (Jake Krueger) Led by an adult Hebrews 1:1-3 We have been studying the major events of the Bible which show us how God has been at work since the creation and continues to be at work in our lives today. With that theme in mind, our opening scripture for today is from Hebrews chapter 1, verses 1 through 3. In the past, God spoke to our people through the prophets. He spoke at many times. He spoke in different ways. But in these last days, he has spoken to us through his Son. He is the one whom God appointed to receive all things. God made everything through him. The Son is the gleaming brightness of God’s glory. He is the exact likeness of God’s being. He uses his powerful word to hold all things together. He provided the way for people to be made pure from sin. Then he sat down at the right hand of the King, the Majesty in heaven. Please stand as we sing our opening hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty”, number 138. * OPENING HYMN “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty” Page 1 of 9 #138 Script for 10:15 Worship on Jan 20, 2013 – led by Confirmation Students HEADINGS PRINTED IN THE BULLETIN ARE BLACK ALL CAPS (with names after) [extra notes are in bracketed italics] Students read the words printed in red. PRAYER OF PRAISE AND ADORATION (Elise DeVuono) We praise you, O God, for breaking through to us in the person of Jesus, your Son, our Lord. When the words of the prophets went unheard and when their actions were ignored, you spoke the creative word once more. Bringing order out of chaos again - this time not to bring a world into being, but to bring your very being into the world. In the midst of this congregation, we praise you. With our lives, we worship you. Gracious God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, to you be all glory and honor, now and forever. Amen * GLORIA PATRI #579 [Elise raises her hands to motion for the congregation to stand] CHILDREN’S MOMENT Page 2 of 9 Script for 10:15 Worship on Jan 20, 2013 – led by Confirmation Students HEADINGS PRINTED IN THE BULLETIN ARE BLACK ALL CAPS (with names after) [extra notes are in bracketed italics] Students read the words printed in red. Major Events of the Bible (In place of a Sermon) Confirmation Students INTRO Jasey During the past few months we have been reading many of the stories of the Old Testament. We are creating a timeline of these major events, with the help of Mr. Werner. [POINT TO CHART] For each event, we are writing down approximately when it took place, what Book of the Bible it is found in, and who the key people are. Today, we are each taking a turn to read a key verse or two from the Bible and then share a brief summary of eight of these stories, from Creation to the birth of Jesus. THE CREATION GENESIS 1:1-2:24 Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. It was also pleasing to look at. And it would make a person wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her. And he ate it. Then both of them knew things they had never known before. They realized they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made clothes for themselves. I am making my covenant with the birds, the livestock and all of the wild animals. I am making it with all of the creatures that came out of the ark with you. I am making it with every living thing on earth. “Here is my covenant that I am making with you. The waters of a flood will never destroy all life again. A flood will never destroy the earth again.” God continued, “My covenant is between me and you and every living thing with you. It is a covenant for all time to come. “Here is the sign of the covenant I am making. I have put my rainbow in the clouds. It will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. THE EXODUS EXODUS 1:1-14, 9:1-7, 13:17-14:30 Seth Exodus 1:6-10 Joseph and all of his brothers died. So did all of their children. The people of Israel had many children. They greatly increased their numbers. There were so many of them that they filled the land. Then a new king came to power in Egypt. He didn’t know anything about Joseph. “Look,” he said to his people. “The Israelites are far too many for us. Come. We must deal with them carefully. If we don’t, they will increase their numbers even more. Then if war breaks out, they’ll join our enemies. They’ll fight against us and leave the country.” General summary of the story in the larger section of passages listed PROMISED LAND JOSHUA 1:1-11, 23:1-9 Jasey Joshua 6:3-4 “March around the city once with all of your fighting men. And the glory of the Lord shone around them. They were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy. It is for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. Here is how you will know I am telling you the truth. You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a large group of angels from heaven also appeared. They were praising God. I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. [after a pause, Mackenzie continues by introducing the offering collection] The ushers may come forward and gather God’s Tithes and our offerings, to support the mission and ministry of our family of faith WORSHIP IN GIVING Sue Stodola * DOXOLOGY #592 [Mackenzie or Aric raises their hands to motion for the congregation to stand] Page 7 of 9 Script for 10:15 Worship on Jan 20, 2013 – led by Confirmation Students HEADINGS PRINTED IN THE BULLETIN ARE BLACK ALL CAPS (with names after) [extra notes are in bracketed italics] Students read the words printed in red. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & LORD’S PRAYER (Aric) You may be seated, as we turn our hearts to God in a time of prayer. Gracious God, because we are not strong enough to pray as we should, you provide Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit to intercede for us in power. In this confidence we ask you to accept our prayers. Holy God, from whom every family on earth takes its name: Strengthen parents to be responsible and loving that their children may know security and joy. Lead children to honor parents by compassion and forgiveness. May all people discover your parental care by the respect and love given them by others. Compassionate God, your Son gives rest to those weary with heavy burdens. Heal the sick in body, mind, and spirit. Lift up the depressed. Befriend those who grieve. Comfort the anxious. Creator of all, we celebrate and honor the memory and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and ask that you stand with all victims of abuse and other crimes. We remember that Dr. King did not bow down to the voices that wanted to silence him, and stands in the legacy of our prophets, incapable of holding back the voice of justice from God. Help us to carry forth your call to justice beyond this Sunday and into our daily lives. Help us to have the courage to stand with the oppressed, to lift up the poor, to live into God’s ways of peace demonstrated by Jesus Christ. Give us the strength to build a better future for all. Fill us with your Holy Spirit that we may bear each other’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ. God of glory, you see how all creation groans in labor as it awaits redemption. As we work for and await your new creation, we trust that you will answer our prayers with grace, and fulfill your promise that all things work together for good for those who love you; We pray this all in the name of Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray together, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. Now receive God’s blessing The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen.
