Spain established the encomienda system for ruling in the “new world.”
Encomiendas were __________________ where the king and queen of
Spain gave conquistadors the right to demand ____________ and
__________ from Native Americans.
What is the origin of the word “encomienda/?
Encomienda—en/co/mien/da: third syllable comes from Latin “manus” or
“hand.” The syllable “da” comes from Latin “dare” meaning “to give.”
Spanish king and queen “gave the hand of power to conquistadors.”
The conquistadors represented the royalty of Spain in the New World.
They were a part of empire.
In 1517, Spain began to bring African slaves to the New World. Why did
Spain bring slaves from across the ocean?
Ninety percent of all slaves ever brought from Africa went to the West
Indies or South America. Only ten percent went to what is today the
United States. Try to explain why this would happen.
Below is the social structure in Spain’s New World empire:
Peninsulares—Spain itself is on a peninsula. Anyone who was born on
the peninsula of Spain was considered “special” and high ranking in the
New World.
Creoles—comes from the Latin word “creare” (to create). These were
people who were “created” or born in the New World.
Mestizos—comes from Latin “miscere” (to mix). These were people who
were mixed Spanish and Native American blood.
Mulattos—were mixed Spanish and African. This word also means
“mixed” (from “mullaweed”) and is derived from Arabic.
In this social structure, what kinds of power were being exercised?
