Division of Information Technology Online Security and Safety Advise your student(s) NOT to download or share copyrighted materials using the campus network. It is a direct violation of the university’s acceptable use policy to conduct illegal activity – such as online piracy – while connected to the university network. Some students have faced litigation for illicit activities. Ensure your student is aware that activities, pictures, and their general online presence is often not erasable. Employers and law enforcement continue to increase their use of online activity to make judgments and gather evidence about individuals. Think before you click Enter. Division of Information Technology Project NEThics and Acceptable Use Guidelines Project NEThics promotes responsible use of information technology through user education and policy enforcement. Project NEThics also responds to claims of misuse of university computing resources. The university’s Policy on the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources is online at www.umd.edu/aup/. File sharing without permission of the copyright holder is a crime under the U.S. Copyright Act. Copyright infringers can be sued for statutory damages (from $750 to $30,000 or more per work infringed). Make students aware that their actions have consequences and that peerto-peer file sharing on campus should be avoided. Some Maryland students who have settled with the RIAA have reported that they had to pay between $3,000 and $4,000. Visit www.it.umd.edu/PlayFair to learn more about avoiding online piracy.
