From the Commandant
Ooorah All,
I want to thank all of those who attended our monthly muster. It was a pleasure to see 34 members and guests
attending this muster. It makes me feel comfortable in knowing that the atmosphere which only we could produce
when joking with one another with regards to whom we are and in what capacity we served is still alive and well. I
know that business meeting or musters can be boring and bringing some levity this venue reduces that stiff tempo.
It was also awesome to see guests attend and I want to thank all of those which invited those guests. In a muster
such as ours, this is where you have the opportunity to show off our detachment and allow the esprit de corps
which we share to be glimpsed. For those which have never viewed this, it can be shocking, but for those of us
which share this common bond, it can only be delivered and accepted to its fullest by those which wear the Eagle,
Globe & Anchor. I also want to thank those which have received awards such as our Past Detachment
Commandants and our Marine of the Year recipients. Being the Detachment Commandant can be demanding and
there should be recognition for this while performing above and beyond what is needed or expected is where
recognition such as being a recipient of our Detachment Marine of the Year comes in at. I want to continue this
recognition and challenge you to strive forward in seeking out new members for our detachment. Marines and
Navy Corpsmen which have served honorably are able to become full members, while others which may not have
served our service at all can become Associate Members. An example of this would be our spouses and others
with the desire to help our mission and our communities. Recruiting new members for our detachment can be
challenging and to recognize this there is a ribbon for recruiting members into our detachment and up to national
recognition. This is why I asked each of our guests who invited them. So what does this mean? If those guests
decide to sign up and are accepted by the detachment, the member with the most recruited members for our
detachment during the year will be awarded the Detachments Recruiting ribbon. So the challenge is set, who will
be our first recruiter of the year for our detachment?
John “Moose” Moysiuk
Detachment Commandant
The Chaplain's Corner
Dear Marines,
I would like to start this article with a question. How many of you men and women in our detachment
feel that you are living an abundant life? How many of you know others who you feel are living the abundant life
style? Jesus said that “the thief comes only to steal and destroy; I come that you can have life and have it more
abundantly.” So, how do we get in touch with God so that we can have the blessings that He promised in His
word, the Bible?
God’s word said that all of us are like sheep that have gone astray, each one of us have turned to his own
way. How can we get off this path that will eventually cause us to destroy ourselves, and lose all hope? God said
that His word is a lamp unto our feet and a light for our pathway. What that means is simply this, God provides the
answer for our life in his word the bible and if we spend time reading His word, He has promised to give us the
guidance and comfort that each of us need.
This process of an abundant life starts out with our asking God to forgive our sins and asking the Lord
Jesus to come into our life. Next, we need to spend some daily time with God through prayer and reading the
Bible and allow God to give you the understanding that you need to apply His word to your life. Then next, I
encourage all of you to get a mentor or a friend to share and help you grow. Finally, find a church that is actively
preaching the word of God, where you will find other friends and Christians to help support you in your daily walk.
In this world of trouble and wars there will always be hardships but I can truthfully say that since I gave
my life to Jesus some 30 years ago, that God has always been faithful to me and so this peace and comfort He gives
to me is what I wish for each one of you.
Your Chaplain,
David Grundl

led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain John Britcher, filling in for Dave Grundl, offered an opening prayer.

motion, which passed with one “nay” vote; thanks Ev.
Guests. Jack Baldwin's guest Larry Weeks is a Marine who served from 1967 to 1973; he served in Vietnam in
tanks and was an MP. Dave Ball's guest Ron Hunter is a Marine who served in the infantry from 1999 to 2011.
Ron said he was an "03 everything". Commandant Moysiuk's guest Jim Fry was an FMF Corpsman for 16 of his 20

Report of the Adjutant. Adjutant Bryson Langel reported that he is updating the roster; he passed around the

Report of the Chaplain. Ev Brown reported for Dave Grundl. Korean Marine Young Kim is in the with kidney
failure; Ev asked that we all keep him in our prayers.
State Trooper Report. John Sager asked the members to keep the State Patrol in our prayers. The previous night a
trooper was hit and killed at the fallen bridge on I-5. We should also keep our local Marine Reserve unit in our
prayers as they are shipping out soon.
Color Guard Report. Russ Russell reported that the Color Guard team did a Rifle Salute at Oddfellows. Gilman
Pelkey also played the bugle at the Vietnam Memorial Wall ceremony.
Report of the Parade Marshal. Russ Russell reported that he had missed the sign-up deadline to get our
Detachment into the Lacey Fun Fair parade. We are scheduled to march in the 4 th of July parade in Tumwater, the
McCleary parade on July 13th, and the Tenino and Rainier parades in August. We should be at the July parades
around 1100 as the parades will kick off at 1200.
Report of the Rose Sales Director. Russ Russell asked for suggestions about where we should have Rose Sales.
He's trying to get us into WalMart. At Cabela's we must now submit a letter on letterhead with the intended date
and a mission statement. Russ would also like suggestions for dates to hold our Rose Sales.
Report of the Boy Scouts Director. John Sager announced that the Boy Scouts plan to be a big part of the parade
on the 4th of July. They are also going camping again this summer.
Report of the Toys For Tots Director. Commandant Moysiuk reported that we have been accepted to run T4T
again this year and we will receive a shipment of toys. Everything is in motion, and we should all be petitioning
businesses now for contributions and barrel sites.
Report from the VLC. Jim Sims reported this in the past week state Senator Mike Carroll passed away. He will be
replaced by Dick Muri, an Air Force veteran. Dick Marcelynas reported that ground has been broken for a new
Veterans Home in Walla Walla. It will have room for 75 Vets and will be the 4 th soldiers home in Washington.
There will also be a new Veterans hospital
OLD BUSINESS:
Detachment Website. Commandant Moysiuk reported that the website is now operational. The new website is at
www.olympiamarines.org.
Membership Forms. The Commandant reminded us that we should all be carrying the new 2013 membership
application forms.
Navajo Code Talkers Museum. The Navajo Code Talkers Museum has finally gotten the information out for taking
donations. They are challenging detachments across the nation to donate at least $100. The Commandant
suggested we donate $50. Jim Sims moved to rescind the $500 we had voted to donate some time ago. Dick
Marcelynas seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Upcoming Conventions. The Commandant reminded us of the Department Convention coming up from June 13 to
June 16. There will be a growl there for advancement from Pup to Devil Dog. The National Convention will be held
in Grand Rapids, Michigan this year. The Fall Staff Meeting will be held October 14-15 in Yakima.
NEW BUSINESS:
Olympia Crest Coffee Booth. Mike Partridge announced that Olympia Crest Coffee has invited the Marine Corps
League to put up a boot for Toys For Tots on Flag Day from 1600 to 2000. Mike already has the people he needs
for the event but everyone else is welcome as well. If interested, we should let him know soon.
Purple Heart Trail Signs. Ev Brown noted that what we just did for the Navajo Code Talkers Museum we will have
to do to get signage along the newly designated Purple Heart Trail along the I-5 corridor. Ev moved that when the
time comes, we make a donation for signs along the Purple Heart Trail. Chuck Lang seconded the motion, which
passed unanimously. The discussion was tabled pending more information on costs. The Commandant will put a
request for donations out statewide.
Growl. There was a growl held at 1100 on Saturday, June 1st at Dirty Dave's Pizza Parlor.
GOOD OF THE ORDER:
- The Commandant presented ribbons to the Detachment's Past Commandants who were present, including Jim
Sims, Cecil Cheeka, Ernie Brown, Dick Marcelynas, and Mike Partridge. The Commandant also presented ribbons
to Detachment Marines of the Year; Tracey Lundquist, Russ Russell, Chuck Lang, Alan Hoover, and Ken Clark
received ribbons.
- The Commandant reminded the members that our Detachment coins are good for fund raising. They are very
nicely designed and only cost members $5. Russ Russell reported that he gave a coin to a man who donated $100
at the last Rose Sale; the man then returned the coin, saying we should give it to a Marine.
Following a prayer from Chaplain John Britcher and a rousing verse of the Marines Hymn, the Commandant closed
the meeting at 0920. Our next Breakfast/Muster will be held at 0800 at the VFW at 2902 Martin Way East on
