What is matter? Continued! OA4.1 Understand properties of matter Word Definition Matter that is made of 1. Element Only one type of atom Cannot be broken down Can exist as atoms or molecules Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are all elements. The picture is of the element zinc in hydrogen chloride. Picture periodic table • Scientists use the periodic table to organize elements. • Each element has its own special place on the table. • The places are decided by the characteristics of the element. Word 2. Molecule Definition Two or more atoms of the same element, hat are chemically bound together. Hard to separate Example: Oxygen gas (2 oxygen atoms), Ozone (3 oxygen atoms), Nitrogen gas (2 nitrogen atoms) Picture Picture Next slide! Ozone molecule Nitrogen molecule In the animation above, two nitrogen atoms (N + N = N2) make one Nitrogen molecule . Word 3. Compounds Definition Atoms of two or more different elements bound together. Hard to separate Example: Water (hydrogen and oxygen), Carbon dioxide (carbon and 2 oxygen), carbon monoxide (carbon and 1 oxygen) Picture Picture Next slide! In the animation above, water (H20) is a compound made of Hydrogen and Oxygen. Carbon dioxide molecule Water molecule Word 4. Mixture Definition A substance made of 2 or more elements or compounds that are mixed together Easy to separate Example: mud (soil and water), concrete Picture Concrete mixture: The thing to remember about mixtures is that you start with some pieces, combine them, and then you can do something to pull those pieces apart again. You wind up with the same molecules (in the same amounts) that you started with Word 5. Solution Definition A mixture where one substance dissolves, (seems to disappear) when it’s put into another. Easy to separate Example: salt water, kool aid Picture Salt Made up of Atoms Matter Mixtures Solution Pure Substances Element Molecule Compounds Closure: five finger summary Trace your hand on a separate sheet of paper.
