Chapter 9 Climate Change Study Guide for Test These are the things you need to make sure you study and know for the test. (Look at your book, your notebook, your journal, your notes, papers that have been returned to you). Key Terms: You should know all the key terms we have studied. Climate (Chapter 9, sect 1. minimal selected topics. Skipping most of sect 2 and 3): Know the difference between climate and weather. Understand why seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth’s axis. Understand why indirect sunlight from the sun gives less heat than direct sunlight. Understand how and why the northern hemisphere has opposite seasons and the southern hemisphere. Know that there are different climate regions around the world based on temperature and precipitation and what affects these differences. Climate and Currents and Regions (Chap 9, section 2 & 3 minimal selected highlights from these two sections): Understand that the Coriolis effect has an effect on ocean currents as well as air currents. Have a basic understanding of what causes El Nino. Know that climates are classified by temperature and precipitation. Know basically there are 6 climate regions. Climate Change (Chap 9, section 4): Have an understanding of what is meant by global warming. Including possible causes and possible consequences. Be able to explain the greenhouse effect and what greenhouse gases are. Know about the effect of excessive carbon dioxide levels. Be able to discuss both sides of the global warming or climate change argument. Understand what the ozone layer is, why it is being harmed and the results of this. Christensen – Chap 9 Climate - Study Guide – rev. 1.20.16 Answer the following questions to help prepare for the test (but also make sure you know material from the other side) 1. Explain why we have different seasons on earth. 2. What would be different if the earth was not tilted on its axis? 3. Explain why the air at the beach or on the coast is cooler than the air inland. 4. Explain the greenhouse effect. 5. What is causing the ozone levels to be destroyed? 6. What are some of the effects of global warming? 7. What is the difference between climate and weather? 8. What are the 4 factors that effect climate temperature? 9. What is a microclimate? 10. What affect do large bodies of water have on climate? 11. What are 3 factors that affect climate precipitation? 12. Explain how mountain ranges affect precipitation. 13. What is it summer in the southern hemisphere when it is winter in the northern? 14. What is the Coriolis effect on ocean currents? 15. What causes an El Nino condition? 16. What are the 6 climate regions? 17. What are some reasons it is believed that man is causing climate change? 18. What are some reasons it is believed that man is not causing climate change?
