1) What is Elie’s attitude towards faith now?
He refuses to try and understand why God would put His people through such
torture and anguish. He feels betrayed by God.
2) What was Elie’s decision about fasting on Yom Kippur? Why did he make that
decision?
His decision was that he was going to rebel against God and his religion. He was
not going to fast/ He made that decision because he thought, “Why should I
thank you when you haven’t done anything to get us out of this mess.”
3) What was the “gift” the Kapos were going to give the prisoners on New Year’s?
They were going to make their selections and kill the weak ones.
4) What does Elie say a better world would be void of? Why?
Bells; they had commanded his life for so long, he never wanted to hear another
bell again

selection? Who was chosen?
They tell them to stay behind; Elie’s father is chosen.

His inheritance was a knife and a spoon from his father. His father gave those
items to him because they were all he had left.

Selection occurs in the hospitals too, and to get out as fast as he can; this panics

evacuated?
The patients who stayed in the hospital were evacuated safely by Russian troops
two days after the others left for another camp. “After the war, I learned the fate
of those who had remained in the infirmary. They were, quite simply, liberated
by the Russians two days after the evacuation.”(82)
