DESCRIPTION BUS 117: Business Calculations/Methods Credits: 3 Prerequisites: none Fundamental arithmetical processes applied to business activities and applications; including discounts, markups, payroll, interest, annuities, present value of money, depreciation, tax computations, business statistics and general application of mathematics for planning and problem solving, using algebraic equations, graphics and other basic forecasting techniques. 3. MATERIALS - REQUIRED Textbook: Practical Business Math Procedures 10th edition © 2011 Author: Jeffrey Slater Publisher: McGraw-Hill ISBN 978-0-07-732793-4 4. GRADES Students will earn their grade according to the following: Final Exam: 200 points Chapter Tests: Each test has 15 questions and is worth 1 points per question Percentage grade determined by points earned divided by total points possible (380) Your grade will be determined by your percentage score as follows: A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 D: 60-69 W or F: 0-59 Revised 9/24/12 1 5. TESTS AND FINAL Tests are due on the date specified in the syllabus. Students are allowed the following for the final: blank sheets of paper for scratch paper, printed lecture notes, and a calculator. The final exam will be comprehensive. 6. MAKE-UP ON TESTS/FINAL If a student will be unable to take a test at the time allotted (see class calendar), he needs to contact the instructor ahead of time in order to make other arrangements. 7. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY An honor code exists in this class that forbids plagiarism and other forms of academic fraud. Plagiarism includes copying material directly from a source, and/or failure to show where the material was found. The practice of plagiarism or other forms of dishonesty (such as cheating during an in-class exam) will result in a failing grade for the course. Students who make their work available for plagiarism by others will suffer the same consequences as students who plagiarize the work. Students are permitted to work together on homework assignments and any take-home tests. 8. CANCELLED CLASSES If a class is cancelled for any reason the tests that were due that day will be due at the next meeting time. 9. Attendance will be taken for the purpose of students earning work days. If a student has three unexcused absences he may be dropped from the class. 10. Students are to eat dinner at approximately 4:00 PM when they are called. Class begins promptly at 4:30 PM, homework and take home tests are due at start of class, and it is expected that the student will have read the chapter before the class in which it will be discussed. Determine prices using trade and cash discounts, markups and markdowns, and perform payroll computations; 4. Calculate simple and compound interest, use present value.
