What’s the “Flap” About
Biodiversity?

GOAL: You will use Chapter 7, Biodiversity and Conservation, to create a “flapper brochure” that will
examine why it is important to protect biodiversity.
How to make a “flapper brochure”: 1. Take a regular, folded manila file folder and fold it in
half the long way.
2. Divide the outer section into thirds and cut up to the fold-line, so you have 6 flaps – 3 on the
front and 3 on the back.
3. Open the file folder all the way and fold the flaps in to the middle.
4. Fold the folder again, so all the flaps are “inside” the folder.
Front Flap -- the cover! Decorate it! Make it look interesting and/or fun! Must have a title that
relates to the title of Chapter 7 – Biodiversity and Conservation. Needs names, date & section
First Opening – Flap Titles. First row (7-1) = “What is Biodiversity?” Second Row (7-2) = “Why is
Global Biodiversity Decreasing?” Third Row (7-3) =” How Can We Protect and Preserve
Biodiversity?” or some other suitable, related titles.
Titles can go across both flaps (or not!), and should include some kind of picture or graphic that
relates to the flap’s title and makes it look interesting!

Make 4 boxes.* “Interview” a medical
researcher, a farmer or chef, an ecotourist, and
any organism –NOT a human, though! Write a
quote for each about how they think
biodiversity benefits them
* They don’t have to be boxes!
Second Row -- 7-2 -- Why Is Global Biodiversity Decreasing?
Apply information about mass extinctions to develop a short slogan reminding others of the
importance of protecting biodiversity! Write it in a banner across the bottom
(or top!) of all 4 panels!
Use the remaining space to describe, explain, and/or picture the
four main threats to biodiversity:
Habitat Loss, Pollution, Overharvesting, and Climate Change
Third Row -- 7-3 -- How Can We Protect and Preserve Biodiversity?
Why is it important for
