We learned a lot and had a great day! Important Dates May 12th or 14th-Fullersburg Woods Field Trip May 16th- School Improvement Day-Half Day May 26th-Memorial Day-no school! May 28th-Step Up Day! June 2nd-Talent Show June 3rd- Field Day and Last day of school! Please don’t forget if you are chaperoning the Fullersburg Woods Field Trip to be in our classroom at 9:15. We have to leave promptly at 9:30 on the bus. Please dress for weather and bring a sack lunch! Language Arts Students were given their new spelling lists today. We met in small groups so students could receive more direct instruction on the spelling pattern they were studying and sort them correctly. In vocabulary, students are working on a rewview packet of all the compound words, prefixes and suffixes we learned this year. There will be a quiz next week. Students will begin new fiction novels to take them to the end of the year. Students are reading Sunnyside Up, The Boxcar Children, and the Summer of Riley. Please ask your child which book they are reading. You should see it at home every night! Students need to keep choosing quality books from the LRC. These will help their vocabulary development as well as comprehension. Ask your child which book they are reading and what it’s about. Also ask them what genre it is! Please continue to have your child read AR books at night! They need to read 9 chapter/nonfiction books this trimester! They also need to earn 80% or higher on the AR test for them to count toward their goal. Students should be able to say: I can achieve 80% or higher on my spelling tests. I can achieve 80% or higher on my AR tests. I can make an inference while reading. I can ask questions while reading. I can find the main idea of a text. I can use context clues to help me find out the meaning of a word I don’t know in a text. Math This week we will focus on triangles, quadrilaterals, and guided math stations. Students also are being trained in guided math stations. Students should be able to say: I can identify an equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangle. I can identify a right, acute, and obtuse triangle. I know the quadrilateral attributes. I can identify solids-faces, edges, and vertices. I can identify an acute, right and obtuse angle. I can use manipulatives to compare fractions and tell if they are greater than, less than, or equal to. I can compare fractions by drawing pictures or using manipulatives. I can draw fractions on a number line. I can make an equivalent fraction by drawing a fraction circle or using my basic facts. I can find the differences between a polygon and a nonpolygon. I can find the area of a rectangle or square by counting square units or use length x width. I can find the perimeter of a plane figure by adding all sides. I can find the volume of a dimensional object using liters and milliliters. I can measure mass of objects using grams and kilograms. I can use a number line to show elapsed time. I can tell time using the words quarter til, quarter after, and half past. I can tell time to the minute. I can use estimation and rounding to solve a multi-step word problem. I can use front end estimation to round because I know that front end estimation means round to the greatest place. I can solve a two-step word problem. I can solve for n. I can make an array to show a multiplication problem. I can make groups of to show a multiplication problem. I can use a number line to show a multiplication problem. I can use a multiplication chart to solve a multiplication problem. I can identify the commutative, associative, zero, identity and distributive properties of multiplication. I can represent and solve a division problem using the sharing model. I can represent and solve a division problem using repeated subtraction. I can write the multiplication and division fact families. Science This week we continue to work on our new unit called People and Animals! There will be no science this week due to the field trip, but we will begin FISH the week after!
