Greek Mythology Essay

Directions: For this essay you will be learning about one of the Olympian Greek Gods or Goddesses. Choose a Greek god or goddess from the list below. Then, follow the steps to complete your research and write your essay.

Gods and Goddesses

Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Demeter, Dionysus, Hades, Hephaestus, Hera, Hermes, Hestia, Poseidon, Zeus

1) Pick ONE of the gods or goddesses above to write your paper about

2) Find 3-4 reliable sources about topic to use in your paper. a) Fill in your sources on the page that is attached b) Wikipedia, Ask, About, etc. are NOT RELIABLE SOURCES! c) Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. are search engines, NOT SOURCES!

3) Gather notes from your research a) Put this information into your own words as you go to avoid plagiarism

4) As you research, answer the following questions about your god/goddess a) Who is your figure and what he or she represent? (what is he or she the god/goddess of) i) What symbol represents him/her? ii) Why is your figure important to Greek mythology? b) Who your figure is related to? i) Origin of birth (how they were born, parents, etc.) ii) Partner(s) and children (if any) c) What is their area or domain of influence (god of fire, goddess of love, etc.) d) What are their qualities, strengths, or talents? (a particular power, can change forms, etc.) e) What personality traits or flaws do they have? (jealous, fall in love with everyone, greedy, etc.) f) Which god in another culture do they resemble? i) For example, Ares is the god of war in Greek Mythology and Odin is the god of war in Norse mythology.

While they both have a tendency to be selfish, Odin is wise whereas Ares is often considered to be immature. g) How is their influence still seen today? i) For example, Venus is the Roman name for Aphrodite. The Venus razor is marketed towards women in a way that makes them believe they will be as beautiful as the goddess of love herself if they use this product. h) Summarize one myth that features this god/goddess i) This should not be more than one paragraph) ii) How is he or she portrayed in this story? (faults, flaws, attributes, etc.) i) Include a picture of your character. Computer generated or hand drawn
