Topaz Miss Ransford Clehonger Primary School Themed Planning SCIENCE SEASONAL CHANGES As Scientists pupils will learn about the four seasons. Pupils will learn what the word weather means and find out how different types of weather can be measured. Pupils will use a class weather station to observe, measure and record the weather across the seasons . Pupils will observe changes across the seasons by exploring signs of winter and spring through nature and wildlife. Pupils will work scientifically by collecting, recording and interpreting simple data. Themes: Heroes and Materials LITERACY Read, Write Inc phonic sessions 4 times a week. Cross– curricular writing linked to topics throughout with opportunities for writing extended pieces of work. Spellings: Tested every Monday in Read, Write Inc Phonic sessions. Handwriting: daily 15 mins practise SPaG: daily 10 min sessions P.E. EVERYDAY MATERIALS As Scientists pupils will learn about everyday materials including wood, plastic, metal, water and rock. Pupils will learn to identify and name everyday materials and will have the opportunity to explore the properties of these materials. Team games and ball skills Dance Pupils will carry out a simple investigation to help them decide which material would be most suitable to use for an umbrella. Going for goals Who am I? MATHEMATICS Generalising Arithmetic Reasoning with measures Discovering equivalence Investigating statistics Solving number problems DESIGN TECHNOLOGY Pupils will design and make their own fabric bunting. Working with felt and other materials, pupils will cut out a bunting shape and use a simple running stitch. Pupils will decorate their flag. COMPUTING Pupils will learn basic painting skills using a painting application on computers and Ipads. They will use colours and brushes to create shapes , fill areas , undo and redo and add text. Spring Term 2016 GEOGRAPHY Cold, Cold, Cold! Pupils begin to understand the effects of climate change and consider how we can combat these changes and create a class eco-code. Pupils will perform a class assembly about Antarctica, penguins and climate change. During this unit of work pupils will use compass directions and directional language, describe routes using maps and map keys. They will identify the world’s continents using globes and atlases and understand the significance of the equator in relation to climate. HISTORY Great Explorers Pupils will learn about the experiences of great explorers including Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong and Robert Falcon Scott. Pupil will explore what makes a person significant and consolidate their understanding of chronology by comparing the historical periods in which these great explorers lived. Kings and Queens Pupils will learn about the significant British monarchs in history, including Richard III, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. ART Pupils will study the life and work of LS Lowry (19th Century painter and produce a multi media collage in the style of the artist improving key skills such as colour mixing, perspective, drawing figures, drawing buildings and scissor skills. MUSIC Pupils will play tuned (Voice, Handbells, bells ) and untuned instruments musically ( small drums, tambourines, rain shakers, maracas )
