Objective: This course is designed as an introduction into applied statistics at the graduate level. Students are expected to have some base knowledge of statistics from a prior course. This course is also designed to assist students in the fundamentals of statistics in preparation for future graduate level statistics courses.

Textbook: An Introduction to Statistical Methods and Data Analysis by R. Lyman Ott and Michael Longnecker (7 th

edition).

Software: MINITAB will be the statistical software required for this course. MINITAB

Version 17 for Windows is available in all University public computer labs. A Minitab version is also available for purchase at the computer stores. You are NOT required to purchase Minitab. Also, you can download a free 30-day trial from www.minitab.com

.

There is not a full version of Minitab available for MACs.

Assessment Plan: The assessment of students will be determined by their performance on three assignment areas: homework, midterms, and final.

Homework (10% of final grade): Seven (7) homework assignments will be offered. The assigned homework problems and due dates are located in ANGEL. The problems will involve by hand calculations and MINITAB. The grading of homework will be done using a “100 / 0 method. If all problems are answered and all work is shown the student will receive a 100, even if your final answer is incorrect. Otherwise, the homework will receive a

0.

Midterms (60% of final grade): Five (5) exams, each exam worth 10% of final grade, will be given during the semester. Although each exam will reflect material most recently covered, the material is cumulative in nature. No make-up exams will be allowed .

Final Exam (30% of final grade): One (1) three hour (cumulative) out-of-class exam will be assigned. This exam will be available mid-week of the last week of class and due by 4:00 PM the day of the scheduled final. More information will be provided after late-drop.

Missed exams: NO make-up exams will be allowed. If you are going to miss an exam you can accept a zero, reschedule your plans, or reschedule the course.

Allowable materials for exams: For all exams you must use a pencil. For midterms you may use one page of notes, handwritten, front and back. As to calculator,

1

you may use a non-cell phone calculator. However, if using a scientific calculator you cannot use its built-in functions (e.g. mean of a list of data), graphing, or statistical modes. NO SHARING MATERIALS DURING EXAMS!!! Violators will automatically receive a zero (0) for that exam, no excuses accepted.
