TAC registration or as a “stand-alone” registration process. Spots are limited in both courses and will be allocated on a
come-first served basis.
S.T.A.R.T.T. Course – Held at the Peter Lougheed Simulation Centre, 0730-1630 on Thursday, April 9th. Course Facilitator
is Dr. Lawrence Gillman. Registration is limited to:
12 Physicians/Residents/Fellows – Cost $200.00
9 RNs – Cost $100.00
6 RRTs = Cost $100.00
S.T.A.R.T.T. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Content:
The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course is the gold standard of trauma care throughout the world. The Simulated Trauma
and Resuscitation Team Training (S.T.A.R.T.T.) course builds on the ATLS principles but focuses on grooming an effective and efficient
trauma teams. The course focuses on crisis resource management (CRM) training in order to teach participants how to effectively
function as members of a multidisciplinary trauma team. We emphasize: communication and leadership skills, effective resource
utilization, situational awareness and problem solving, and how to enhance completion of tasks.
The course consists of a brief didactic session discussing the principle of CRM training and the history and rationale behind CRM. The
remainder of the day will consist of small groups rotating through a number of high-fidelity trauma simulations. Each will be followed
by an extensive debriefing session by experienced trauma team leaders discussing not only the medical content of the scenario but
also focusing on communication and leadership skills and applying the CRM principles from the morning session.
Objectives:
By the end of this course the participant will be able to:
1) discuss the history of crisis resource management training and the rationale for trauma team member training
2) describe the principles of crisis resource management including problem- solving approaches, situational awareness, limited
resource utilization, leadership and communication skills
3) highlight the similarities and differences between a sequential ATLS approach to trauma management versus a parallel,
simultaneous approach used in level 1 trauma centres
4) understand the organization of the trauma team and the roles of each of its members
5) have the opportunity to demonstrate and practice these skills during a simulated trauma resuscitation
Audience: The course is aimed at emergency and surgical residents, practicing surgeons and emergency physicians, nurses, respiratory
therapists and their respective trainees interested in enhancing trauma team skills. Previous ATLS training is ideal though not
essential.

Pre-Conference Simulation Courses
Surgical EDE-Emergency Department Echo (EDE) Course: (30 MOC Section 3)
Date: Thursday April 9th from 0900-1700
Location: TBA
Registration is open to: Maximum of 12 Participants (Multidisciplinary)
Cost per participant: $1695.00
To Register and submit payment go to: www.edecourse.com
Beginning in 2001, the EDE - ED Echo course has been taught over 700 times to over 10,000 Canadian physicians. Its use has become
the standard of care in large trauma centers, remote settings and in Canadian Forces combat units. The course is unique in that it has
continually evolved as the instructor team gained insight into the way beginners learn this skill. Numerous techniques were developed
to help the learner acquire a basic understanding of ultrasound image generation and interpretation, making the EDE Course the most
effective teaching vehicle for this modality. At the end of a single day, participants will be able to detect: Pericardial effusions,
AAA's, Intra-abdominal hemorrhage, Hemothoraces (Pleural Effusions) and Pneumothoraces. Beginning in 2014, the EDE Course has
placed all of its didactic material on-line. Participants can now read the text and watch the lectures in the comfort of their homes, at
their own pace. Missed something in a lecture? No big deal anymore, just stop, rewind and watch again. This enables us to
provide even more hands on time on the course day.
