English 1 – Spring Final Exam – Review Sheet Necessary Study Sheets -- The following items are handouts / notes you will need to study for the final. (If you do not have one of the following handouts, come see me on AcLab to re-copy the notes.) 1. Notes – the IRE Pargraph (blue sheet). You will be responsible for all of the information on this sheet. You will have to write IRE paragraphs WITHOUT help / an outline sheet. 2. Citation Information (blue sheet) and the Works Cited / In-text Citation Notes (blue sheet). You will be responsible for all of the information (front and back) on these sheets. You will have to answer questions about both kinds of citation and be able to DO both kinds of citation. 3. Basic Parts of a Simple Argument (back side of Slip/Trip) Sheet (blue). You will be responsible for defining/explaining each part of an argument. You will also have to revise and/or write evidence, warrants, and backing/explanation. 4. Figurative Language Vocabulary Chart (blue or white paper). You will be responsible for all of the information on the sheet. You must be able to correctly identify, define/explain, and use each type of figurative language. Parts of the Final 1. Reading Summative Assessment (50 points) – You will read a short story and address the following items in IRE form o identify, label, and explain figurative language in the story and what the writer was trying to get across by using it. o analyze the diction of a passage and how it helps create the tone. o identify and explain the main idea of the story o identify and explain supporting details that show the main idea o summarize the story 2. Citation (15 points) – On this section you will have to do a Works Cited entry for a magazine article and figure out the in-text citations for different Works Cited entries. 3. Argumentation Work (20 points) – On this section you will have to explain/define the different pieces of an argument and revise incorrect or incomplete evidence, warrants, and backing/explanation. 4. Reflective Writing (20 points) – You will have to write a reflective IRE paragraph with 2-3 IRE sandwiches. You will see the topic for the first time when you take the final.
