Chart your course through this Public Speaking course by following this class
outline:
1. Journal (about one per week) Journals will be checked four times, the last time
they are ALL submitted, so keep all journals together. Journals should be ½
page handwritten or roughly 11 sentences (if typed). Topics should be fully
developed and school appropriate.

4. Class discussion #1 July 23
 Class discussions are based on topics of student choosing. In a
comfortable setting, we will discuss and debate issues relevant to you.
All students are expected to participate (to discuss, bring up a point,
counter a statement, etc) at some point so come prepared by having
read or watched the news or listened to “academic” discussions. See
rubric for more details.
 July 21- introduce idea, begin reading and completing journal
 July 22- discuss HOW to do a class discussion, watch videos to further
discussion topics; review for vocabulary “test”

7. Class Starter and Notebooks Each class starting July 30
 Each student will “open” the class once. Opening a class can be:
vocabulary review, speech/ project review, favorite quote discussion, an
anecdote, yoga to relax and open the mind, anything that can somehow
tie back to our class. 5-10 minutes. All students will take notes and
keep in the notebook. Submission is part of the final exam. Sign up for

the date you wish to start the class. You may work with a partner but
double the time allotted (so, 10 minutes minimum). If there are open
spots after all have signed up, you may sign up for an extra starter for
extra credit. See rubric.

2014-15 Common Application Essay Prompts
The Common Application will retain the current set of first-year essay prompts for 2014-15, without any
edits or additions. The essay length will continue to be capped at 650 words. The feedback received from
member colleges and school counselors has been positive. The essay prompts will be reviewed on an
annual basis to ensure that they continue to serve students and member colleges well.
The essay prompts are as follows:





Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they
believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then
please share your story.
Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and
what lessons did you learn?
Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act?
Would you make the same decision again?
Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. What do you do or
experience there, and why is it meaningful to you?
Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition
from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.
