Using these tools, teachers can design, adapt, and customize learning materials for their students with disabilities, students with diverse learning styles, and students who are second language learners, so that they can more fully and independently participate in and become more engaged in the learning process. The Word on Word Adapted Learning Materials Create adapted lessons, worksheets, quizzes, and other learning materials for students to independently access and manipulate. Word tools: • Item banks • Tables for Graph Paper • Sound recordings • Graphics and SmartArt • Electronic forms • Add-In: Learning Essentials • Add-In: Mathematics • Equation and Symbol Tools • Templates Instructional Applications Allows students to display their knowledge by moving objects, clip art, and images around in a document instead of drawing, writing, or cutting and pasting on a hard copy. • Worksheets • Tests • Quizzes • Interactive classroom activities great for interactive white boards Place 25 cents in the piggy bank. Graphic from www.timtim.com • Create a visual bank of objects for students to drag and drop in a Word document. • Objects can also be moved by using the arrow keys on the keyboard. • Create tables to make customized graph paper. • Size and colors of cells, columns, and rows can be customized for visual and physical accessibility. Insert > Table Table Tools > Design • Item banks of points and lines can be dragged onto the coordinates of the x, y axes on the graph. Instructional Applications • Allows students who may have difficulty writing to verbally record answers into a Word document. • Allows teachers to record verbal prompts into a Word document for students. o Worksheets o Tests o Instructional aides • Creates a WAV sound file that can be recorded and edited directly in the Word document (in Windows XP and earlier versions). • Multiple WAV files can be inserted directly into a document. Insert tab > Create new tab > Object > Wave Sound …OR… Place Voice Comment command Access Toolbar on the Quick • For Windows 7 and Vista • Programs > Accessories > Sound Recorder • After making recording, save it and then insert it into your Word document. • Insert tab > Object > Create from file tab and Browse to find your saved recording file to insert it into your document. • A shortcut to the Sound Recorder can be placed on your desktop. Instructional Applications • Allows students to have visual prompts to complete an activity. • Allows teachers to document student progress with digital images. Worksheets Lab activity directions Task analysis cards • Pictures inserted into the table will be consistent with the table column width and can be displayed in an organized manner. • After drawing the table, select from the Layout Tab > AutoFit > Fixed Column Width. Instructional Applications • Allows students to organize clip art, text, digital images, and sound files in a way that best demonstrates their knowledge OR assists them in learning a new concept. • Allows teachers to create and organize multi-media graphic organizers for specific concepts. Worksheets Class notes Study guides Post-reading activities Interactive white board activities •Create custom flow charts and organizers using the Drawing Tools •Insert pictures, text boxes, shapes, or sound files •Align objects to create an organized flow chart •Link ideas together by drawing arrows or lines •Create tangibles Scientific Method Rope • Available in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel • Provide a visual representation of your information and ideas, such as relationships, processes, and more • Many different layouts • Add text or graphics, customize colors • Select the Insert tab > SmartArt Mammals Fishes Birds Amphibians Reptiles In PowerPoint, easily convert a bulleted list to a SmartArt graphic! • • • • Collection Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Collection Precipitation Collection Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Evaporation Condensation Instructional Applications Allows students to demonstrate knowledge by: • Using a mouse to select from pre-made item banks instead of lengthy typing • Using a keyboard to type answers into a text field instead of writing Worksheets Tests Lab reports Projects Create documents with: • Checkboxes •Drop-down menus •Fill-in-the-blank text fields • Once the form is created, the document must be locked or protected for the electronic form fields to become active and available for selection. • Click the Microsoft Office Button > Word Options > Popular > Show Developer tab in the Ribbon check box > OK. • When you want to create a form, open a Word document or template, select the Developer tab > Legacy Tools and in the drop-down menu select the Legacy Forms. MS Office 2007 Add-In: Learning Essentials • Learning Essentials download: http://tinyurl.com/37yjnv5 • Math and science chart and diagram templates, worksheets, test and quiz creator, periodic table, calculator, equation editor, project assistance, lesson plans, tutorials, and more • After downloading, can be accessed on the Add-Ins tab > Educator Tools or Student Tools > Math and Science Tools. MS Word: Mathematics Add-In • Free add-in for MS Word and OneNote available at www.microsoft.com/download/e n/details.aspx?id=17786 • Includes Equation Tools, Calculator, Graphing Tools, and more MS Word: Equation and Symbol Tools To create equations and insert additional mathematical symbols into equations: • On the Insert tab, in the Symbols group, explore the Equation and Symbol tools. • Tutorials: - http://tinyurl.com/2aqqqh2 (MS Office) - http://ist.uwaterloo.ca/ec/equations/equation2007.html - http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/write-insert-orchange-an-equation-HA010370572.aspx Instructional Applications • Allows teachers to create documents that students cannot change. o Worksheets, tests, projects, instructional aides • Allows students to manipulate the document and save their work WITHOUT being able to change the original document • Provides students with a framework to complete assignments. Students can focus on entering content instead of focusing on organizing their response • Creates a copy of the original document each time the template is opened. • Templates are identified by .dotx • File > Save as > Word Template Free Text to Speech Text to speech supports can be used to read text aloud. Users can manipulate features such as: • Voice type • Speed of reading • Volume • Highlighting of text as it’s being read • Font size and style Extensive list of free text to speech supports: http://udltechtoolkit.wikispaces.com/Free+text+to+speech Voice Over WordTalk Plugin for Word www.wordtalk.org.uk/Home PowerTalk Program for PowerPoint (for .ppt and .pps) http://fullmeasure.co.uk/powertalk Excel Speak Commands The Power of PowerPoint Instructional Applications • Allows teachers to easily create electronic or tangible instructional materials. o Instructional aides o Interactive quizzes o Jeopardy-style games o Choose your own adventures o Adapted books • Allows students to interact with information in a variety of ways including text, graphics, animation, video, and sound. Multimedia! • Allows students to choose their sequence of learning or receive reinforcement during activities through the use of hyperlinking. http://www.schenectady.k12.ny.us/users/title3/Future%20Grant%20Projects/math68.htm PowerPoint: Hyperlinking • Jeopardy and Millionaire games are created by hyperlinking text to slides within the presentation. • Action buttons hyperlink slides to home slides. http://teach.fcps.net/trt14/Power%20Point%20Ga mes/power_point_games.htm Slides can be hyperlinked so that when text, graphics, or action buttons are hovered over or clicked on, it will display another slide within the presentation, a website, or another document. “A, B, or C” will link to this slide. “D” will link to this slide. Example of Reinforcement Activity Example of Interactive Learning Menu Each shape is hyperlinked to a slide in the presentation (Place In This Document) PowerPoint Timers Supports time management and organization. Fun tool for timed games! Insert numbers and graphics or table on your slide. Select the Animations tab (versions 2007 and earlier) or the Transitions tab (version 2010). Go to Advance Slide. Click the checkbox and enter time interval for slides to advance. Select Apply to All.
