Service Stratum
May 2012 | Current
Senior Principal Architect
I am a senior solution and integration architect who creates and implements service oriented solutions on
platforms that help companies transform from legacy applications to modern cloud applications and service
oriented architectures. I create business processes using BPMN/BPEL modeling and design architectures using
UML and Model Driven Architecture disciplines. Once complete, I design the Software as a Service (SaaS),
integrations/infrastructures as a service (IaaS), service orientation and platforms necessary to implement the
solutions and lead teams of architects, developers, mid-tier resources, off-shore developers and integration
specialists to a successful completion. Here are the projects and accomplishments I have been responsible for
designing and implementing over the past 2 years. (these are 3 of the many projects that I have done)
1.
2.
3.
Enterprise CASE Management Solution (Volunteer/Off Hours): I am on a team of 5 principal architects
leading and designing a volunteer and project management solution for a multi-billion dollar organization.
It is a multi-year initiative that is done by several hundred remote volunteers. This enterprise class
solution has 20,000 + concurrent members actively using the web application and contains over 400,000
members across different countries. I write designs for the application and manage development teams
to develop new features. I design specifications for .NET Entity Framework, Knockout.js, Java, CSS, HTML5
and assist in Hi-Fidelity Markup and service design. The site is load balanced across 3 data centers and
has an average response time of .001 seconds per page load.
Website Modernization and Salesforce Implementation: I designed a simple transformation model that
allowed Vertrue, a multi-billion dollar marketing company, to transform 43 websites and applications to
Salesforce and Force.com. As a chief architect, I modeled UML class and sequence models to design a
cross domain, cross platform integration suite leveraging Service Oriented Architecture and real time
service integrations. I wrote technical specifications for over 90 large integrations with AS400 platforms,
SaaS platforms, OAuth/Rest APIs, and other .NET and Java platforms. I developed several large BPEL realtime models that are implemented on Informatica’s Real Time process engine. I led 2 onshore and 1 off
shore teams to the successful transformation of this AS400/BizTalk platform to a .NET, MVC, Salesforce,
Informatica platform running in the cloud. The integrations average 6000 + concurrent users per minute
and respond in less than 2 seconds.
Automated Enrollment Service Platform: I designed a new enrollment platform for Blue Cross Blue Shield
of Nebraska. This enrollment platform is used for the Healthcare Exchange integration and details the
automated enrollment of new and existing consumers, the demographic and logistic mining of their data
and the automated enrollment into their consumer portal. I designed BizTalk orchestrations using UML

sequence models, UML class modeling, Service Oriented Architecture and Behavior Driven Development
using Specflow. I also designed and help implement the Federated, Cross Domain data architecture
necessary to implement the several hundred partners that do business with Blue Cross. This solution is
built on a .NET stack utilizing ADFS 2.0 and the EDI standard 835, 5010 enrollment classification.

Thought Leader/Senior Application Architect/Analyst
As a senior application architect I designed and developed architectures necessary for transformation from an
AS400 platform to a service oriented architecture. I used Model Driven Architecture and received several
certifications in MDA and SOA. Here are some accomplishments using that approach.
1.
2.
3.
HIPAA 5010 Implementation: Designed a new architecture to manage the 5010 EDI specification and
used Service Oriented Architecture to design a common 837 real-time transaction processor. This
processor can handle 100,000 837(x) transactions per day and BlueCross transacted over $100 billion
dollars per year in transactions with this solution. I designed and led several on shore and off shore teams
to develop the XML standards utilizing BizTalk EDI Accelerator, .NET applications and MVC. I designed and
developed a real time Enterprise Operations Center utilizing .NET, MVC 4, Entity Framework, and
JQueryUI. This multi-year, multi-million dollar project is a cross domain, cross platform real time service
oriented solution utilized by 4 organizations.
Enterprise Operations Center: Designed and help develop an MVC and Fusion Chart solution to monitor
the BlueCross BlueShield of Nebraska Enterprise Service Bus and Integration Partners. Utilizing Entity
Framework and Fusion Charts, a java based platform, I developed 2 teams of developers and integrated
SCCM, SCOM, Axway File Transfer, Informatica Power Center, and Cisco Network devices into a custom
built .NET solution that is a centralized dashboard for ongoing operations support. This solution is
currently utilized by 5 organizations and has 24x7x365 monitoring and is on the Tier 1 enterprise class
critical solutions. It monitors billions of dollars of transactions and processes.
Established SOA Governance: As a senior, I developed a 3 year plan to implement standards for Service
Oriented Architecture. I developed a cross functional team of senior technical and business partners and
led the team to develop the data, integration, application and support service architectures. I developed
the initial Information, business, integration, data and federated service architectures and led several
teams to implement common business and data services. These services implement business processes
and meet service level objectives. This ESB utilizes .NET, Java and other open architectures. It
implements Zachman, TOGAF, SOMF, SOAML, UML, EBPMN, ADM and other architectural frameworks.

Information Systems Strategic Innovator
As an innovator, I designed, documented and led development teams to implement several cross domain,
cross platform projects utilizing Enterprise Architecture and model driven design. Here are some
accomplishments.
1.
2.
Healthcare Case Management Solution: As an integration specialist, I transformed an AS400 system
into a Java-based architecture. This multi-year, multi-million dollar project implemented over 200
major healthcare institutions into a new patient management system. This solution managed over 1
million patients and their demographics, accounts, medical records and claims. I designed the
database architecture and BizTalk integration platform and led teams to implement it. I also
designed the reporting engine utilizing Business Objects, .NET and real time web components through
BizTalk. I wrote all of the client specifications and integrations and led teams of on shore and off
shore developers to develop the solution. This successful transformation led to a reduction in
ongoing maintenance and an increase in new sales and client integrations.
Centralized Account Management Solution: Utilizing custom java development, I designed a java
based web application that integrated a tool called Jacada to pull data from 15 different insurance
companies and centralize it into a dashboard for member support. I designed the data models
necessary for real time pulls and also designed the markup necessary to support the centralized look
and feel. This multimillion dollar solution reduced the time to search for Overpayments and Third
Party Liability from 20 minutes per case to 20 seconds. Once the data was in the database, I
developed custom queries to automate the liability and overpayment checks. This led to revenues
over $2,000,000 per month, an increase of 50% in prior months.
TECHNOLOGIES/STANDARDS/METHODOLOGIES/DISCIPLINES
I have written specifications, evaluated or developed in the following languages. At present I am not actively
developing solutions but design them leveraging my past development experience. Please see my website for
further explanation of my skill set at http://servicestratum.com Languages/Platforms: .NET, entity framework,
ASP.NET, Knockout.js MVVM, Knockout.js MVC, HTML5, CSS3, FusionCharts, JavaScript, JQueryUI, C#, XAML,
