AntConc Task Introduction During English and Technology lectures, we are told to do one project that using AntConc. What is AntConc? “AntConc is a program for analysing electronic texts ( that is, corpus linguistics ) in order to find and reveal patterns in language. It was created by Laurence Anthony of Waseda University. The topic that i chose is about flood in Malaysia. I’m interested to digging more about this topic since it blow all the Malaysian citizien with this disaster during begining of year 2015. Some questions that I want to know and discover are: Which area are affected What are the reason for the flood, and What are the prevention of it Source of Corpus For my project, I searched the information through data search engines which belonged to UKM’s main library – Perpustakaan Tun Sri Lanang . The most of sides that i visited is BLISS. Plus, i also collected the sources from online news – The Star Online. Overall, my sources are 35 news from The Star Online which all from beginning of the 2015. I analyzed my data using corpus analysis software called AntConc. The Result 1) Which area are affected by flood. By using AntConc application, I was able to get for the list of words with their frequency hit on every text. For this question, i found that the area was most affected is from East Malaysia which are Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu. This is because the states are located near to the South China Sea. Next is Johor Bahru, Perak, Sabah and Sarawak. The recent floods have been described as the worst in Malaysian history. Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Perak and some areas in Sabah and Sarawak were badly affected with 21 people reported killed and some 200,000 displaced. So here I attached the result of the Concordance which appeared in the texts. 2) What are the reason What are reasons for the floods? Is it due to God’s wrath, development and logging activities? Using AntConc, i found some reasons that are related to the flood. Associate professor in environmental studies at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Dr Zaki Zainudin said that the current flood in Malaysia is an “extraordinary situation”. “The most prevalent factor in the floods is rainfall, and the rainfall this time around is so intense. “The perigean tide is also another factor because it blocks the flow of water going to the sea. And I believe that these two factors are the main reasons for the flooding,” said Dr Zaki. 3) What are the prevention Next, the word ‘prevention’ has appeared 7 times and the word ‘precaution’only appeared for once. The prevention that we should alert are that permits for development and logging need to be carefully monitored to prevent over development, especially in floodprone areas. Moreover, various agencies across Malaysia need to work together to better manage the flooding across the country. Plus, Government needs to improve the drainage system in various states and increase enforcement to curb illegal dumping into rivers and drains to prevent it from clogging up. Health Minister Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam said 753 suspected leptospirosis infections with 126 confirmed cases were recorded from Jan 1 in the flood-hit states. He said there are also increases in other diseases such as acute gastroenteritis, other diarrheal diseases and upper respiratory tract infections among flood victims. Subramaniam also said that there are 20 confirmed melioidosis cases recorded at the flood affected places. “We are increasing our public education and awareness, and public hygiene campaigns so that they (flood victims) drink only boiled water and eat well-cooked food. “We want them to also take precautionary measures such as wearing boots and gloves when cleaning their premises.” Conclusion To conclude, I found out that flood is one of the natural disaster that always happen in Malaysia. This is the things that we cannot run from. What we can do is, prevent everything that can make the flood goes worse. Like what Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said, Malaysia will conduct an in depth study of the Japanese governance structure in dealing with natural disasters. The Deputy Prime Minister said the study would be conducted to gauge whether such amodel was feasible for Malaysia. "In Japan, there is no specific agency that deals with disaster management. "Instead they have a specific law that enables a special council to manage disasters before, during and after it occurs," he told a press conference during the conclusion of his working visit to Japan on Monday. He added that top officials would be sent to Japan to study their model and methods implemented in dealing with disasters. "They (the Japanese) mostly dealt with earthquakes but they also dealt with floods. "There are some mitigation efforts that we can learn from," he said.
