Breanna Cooper Mr. Davis Work-Based Learning October 2014 Professionalism I believe that the expectations, attitude, and work ethics that are important for an outstanding employee come from being mature enough to handle the responsibilities that come with having a job. The job I have at Dunkin Donuts is my first job. I am able to see lots of different personalities and how people handle stress at work. I also work with different managers and see how they work with the employees. I have become more patient, a better listener, and a little more outgoing by working at Dunkin Donuts. The managers expect the employees to be on-time, work their assigned shifts, provide really good customer service and follow all safety codes. As an employee I expect to be assigned hours, have a safe work environment and be paid when I am supposed to and for the hours that I work. The “give and take” of being an employee and the employer needing employees to help run their business is important. The employer and the employee both rely on each other in order to be successful. My attitude at work is one that is focused on getting the job done. When I first started working in May of 2014 I was shy and spent my time trying to learn all of the equipment and how to fill the customer’s orders. Now that I have been there for a few months I can jump right in and work with customers without any problems. One thing that helps is that a lot of customers are regulars. They come in and want pretty much the same thing they order every time. This makes my job easier, especially when I get to know them by name. Having a good attitude and being friendly helps the customer know that we are really there to serve them. During the summer, we had to offer ice cream samples from Baskin Robbins. This was a fun because everybody likes free ice cream samples. By having a good attitude it can help other employees too. If someone comes to work feeling bad but 1 works a shift where everyone is working together, it can improve someone’s attitude. Body language and tone of voice also contribute to someone’s attitude. For example, you can tell by the way someone is standing and how he or she greets you if they have a good attitude or not. I am helpful and friendly to all the customers even if they are not friendly towards me. I took the work ethics survey and have very good results. My highest score was dependability (7.00 out of 7) and my next highest score was interpersonal (6.69). My lowest score was initiative (6.19 out of 7). That’s probably because I don’t plan on working at Dunkin Donuts forever and would not want to be promoted to manager. Teamwork effects my initiative because depending upon what shift I work. I enjoy working during the mornings on the weekends. The store is busy and the time goes by fast. I don’t enjoy working during the week and having to close the store. It gets slow around closing time and we have a lot of cleaning to do. Different managers work different shifts so knowing what they expect from the team is helpful. Sometimes we have promotions going on or different products to sell. There is always something new going on. I believe I am an asset to any team I work with because I often work extra hours and cover other people’s shifts. Work habits that I have are being on-time and working my scheduled hours. The stores has issues with some employees that call in and don’t come to work. This effects the entire team because usually that means that the rest of us will have to cover the person’s shift. I have not had another job to compare it to but I am pretty sure that people who call in a lot are not viewed as the most valuable employees. I think these employees should be let go and new people hired who want to work. That would help the morale at my job. 2
