“Since I was cut from the reedbed, I have made this crying sound.
Anyone apart from someone she loves understands what I say.
Anyone pulled from a source longs to go back.
At any gathering I am there, mingling in the laughing and grieving,
a friend to each, but few will hear the secrets hidden within the notes.
No ears for that.
Body flowing out of spirit, spirit up from body: no
concealing that mixing.
But it's not given us to see the soul.
The reed flute is fire, not wind.
Be that empty.
Hear the love fire tangled in the reed notes, as
bewilderment melts into wine.
The reed is a friend to all who want the fabric torn and drawn away.
The reed is hurt and salve combining.
Intimacy and longing for intimacy, one song.
A disastrous surrender and a fine love, together.
The one who secretly hears this is senseless. A tongue has one
customer, the ear.
A sugarcane flute has such effect because it was
able to make sugar
in the reedbed.
The sound it makes is for everyone.
Days full of wanting, let them go by without worrying that they do.
Stay where you are inside sure a pure, hollow note.
Every thirst gets satisfied except that of these fish, the mystics,
who swim a vast ocean of grace still somehow longing for it! No
one lives in that without being nourished every day.
But if someone doesn't want to hear the song of the reed flute, it's
best to cut conversation short, say good-bye, and leave.”

Chanting practice: Ya Sami - Hu (Divine sound) Can do in parts.
“Speak to me o Beloved, the ears of my heart are listening.”
Shaghal for Sound: While inhaling gently seal your ears repeating
one of the above mantra. Listen for the continuously audible sound
Hu, while you hold your breath. Exhale letting your awareness go out
to external sound and rest in the pause before your next inhalation.
Do 10 – 20X.
“One must concentrate on the word Hu during this practice; in other
words hear the sound which comes to one on closing the ears, as Hu,
and interpret it to oneself as a sound of the inner working of the
whole universe. This practice brings one to stillness of mind, and
raises one above the disagreeable noises of the world, and gives one
peace in the midst of the crowd. The best time for this practice is late
at night or early in the morning, and the best place for this is the

constructing is by the power of this word, and this word is the sign
of the working of the universe. By hearing this word one get closer to
the higher planes of life, the intuitive faculties become more clear,
and one is drawn closer to the Source.” HIK
“The practice of Shagal enables not only the organs of hearing but
all the veins and tubes of the body to resound the voice of the spheres.
The voice of the spheres is made of the collective sounds of the World
resolved into one sound which the adepts hear as Hu. The Divine
Spirit is All-Spirit and therefore the all-sound is the Divine Voice.
One might say that each sound conveys to one something, a word or
an idea, what does the sound which becomes physically audible to
the ears and which thrills the whole nervous system, convey? It
conveys the idea which is the sum total of all ideas. As in the seed
there is leaf, fruit and flower, yet not manifest to view, so in this
universal sound which apparently conveys no idea, all ideas exist.
As the seed needs the earth and the water and the sun to rise as a
plant and it brings fruits and flowers, so the sound needs the ground
of thought, the water of feeling, the light of intelligence to help it
grow and bring forth inspirations and revelations as its fruits and
flowers.” HIK
The 10 Sounds
An adept who practices Shaghal, after some time will have an
experience of that Shaghal during times when she is not practicing.
She will hear sounds of the sphere in ten forms: in the form of the
buzzing of the bees; in the form of the bells ringing in the ears; in the
form of whistles blowing; in the form of the fluttering of the leaves;
in the form of the running of the water; in the form of the sound of
Vina; in the form of the cooing of the wind; in the form of the
crashing of the thunder; in the form of the music of the spheres; in
the form of the song of the angels. Many other experiences will be
vouchsafed to the one who practices Shaghal. And the less one will
speak of them to others the more powerful one will become. Shaghal
helps one to be in the world and not be of the world. It raises one
from the limitations of the earthly life. HIK
The pores of the Buddha’s body radiate the light of wisdom; That
light intones a sublime sound everywhere— All who hear it are free
from worry and fear.
Speaking a wondrous sound in the ten directions, That sound
pervades the entire universe— Such is the Buddha’s meditation state:
This is the realm of Ocean Tide Thunder.”

Shaghal means an occupation to penetrate through the inner planes.
The Shaghal for sound, for hearing with the ear of the heart, is to
close one’s ears with the tips of the fingers starting with about five
seconds, the important thing is not to strain! This must be done after
having inhaled a full breath; and it is necessary to control the breath,
in other words to hold the breath in, while doing this exercise. One
must concentrate on the word Hu during this practice; in other words
hear the sound which comes to one on closing the ears, as Hu, and
interpret it to oneself as a sound of the inner working of the whole
universe. This practice brings one to stillness of mind, and raises one
above the disagreeable noises of the world, and gives one peace in the
midst of the crowd. The best time for this practice is late at night or
early in the morning, and the best place for this is the solitude.
One must practice sound Shagal for five to ten minutes and then try
to hear the word Hu by summing up all the different noises in one.
The best time for this practice is the midst of the night or early in the
morning. All the different noises, however different they may be from
one another, when they are collectively heard, resolve into the word
Hu. One must contemplate upon the idea that all the Source is

Contemplation of the Inner Voice
The nature of sound is such that when the ears become accustomed to
it, it becomes in time inaudible. For instance, when a person who is
unaccustomed to the noise of a factory goes where the machines are
working she feels the noise because she is unaccustomed to it. If we
think of the noise of the works of the whole Universe which is
continually going on, the noise of a factory in comparison to it would
not be even as a drop compared with the ocean, and one never hears
it. When sailing in a ship, at the beginning the noise becomes
unbearable to the unaccustomed ears, but as one goes on hearing it
the ears become so accustomed to it in time that one never notices it.
The workings of the mechanism of the body and especially the
working of the breath in all the vacua of the body have a particular
sound. The words “opening of the center” mean the clearing of the
center and emptying of the veins and tubes of the body which enable
the breath to move about freely in the body. In every center the breath
makes a distinct sound, and in every tube the breath has a particular
sound, and ten different sounds are recognized by a mystic.
When these ten different sounds are distinctly audible to the Sufi then
it is evident that her body is purified and the senses are keen. Then
she is capable of contemplating upon sound. Her body becomes a
dome in which the breath echoes, and by this her innermost being is
awakened and every part of her being is thrilled. The joy of this
experience is incomparable with any earthly sensations. The whole
being of the mystic becomes etherealized and uplifted. And when
spiritual meditation is attached to it then it is like a fragrant gold.
When a mystic is so etherealized as to be able to enjoy this
contemplation, pain and diseases keep far away from her and her
perception becomes keen. All things of the external world and of the
inner world are perceived by her. Therefore Hindus call the mystic
Antarjnani, the Knower of the World Unseen. It is mastery of Shaghal
which in time leads to this bliss. HIK

The Nature of the Sound Audible in Shaghal
Humans are constituted of three aspects of body. One is the finer
aspect of body, which the senses and their organs represent; there is a
gross aspect of the body, which actions and their organs represent;
there is yet a third aspect, which is a causal body, or a controlling
body, which directs activities, which stands as an impetus or an
impulse behind every activity. The manifestations of the activity of
this body are first reflected within and then they manifest without;
and the one who has even the least little idea of this knowledge will
never believe for one moment that there exists such a thing as chance.
There are suras of the Qur’an in support of this: “Everything is
appointed upon a certain time.” “Not one single atom moves without
the command of God.” “God has dominion over all things.” And this
part of God’s being is the divine part in humanity.
The effect of every activity that is started in this part of one’s being
manifests in the form of light and sound which is audible within. The
one who has trained their senses by Shaghal is able to turn their
senses, and the senses (which in the case of the average person see
outward phenomena alone) in the case of the seer can see the external
world as well as the inner world. The inner world can be seen to a
great depth, even deeper than this world; this is only an intermediate
step to the inner vision. One may say,“Where are the objects of
perception for the inner vision?”
One may say,“Where are the objects of perception for the senses
within?” The answer is, everything is within, if only one can see it.
Light is there, form is there, fragrance is there, sweet, sour, and bitter
is there, and the inner world is more interesting than the external.
There is a joy of Heaven and the agony of Hell. But two senses are the
principal ones — sight and hearing. Hearing is still higher, for it
appeals to the first manifestation, that is the Word. First was the
Word, then came Light, then all was created, as the Bible says.
Therefore everything that happens is first audible to the hearer and
then visible to the seer who can see and hear within. HIK
There are ten sounds recognized by the mystics and vaguely described
as the noise of humming bees, and the vina, and of bells ringing at a
distance; and every sound denotes to a mystic that the activity is in a
certain direction of the body. For there are twenty tubes, ten
belonging to each side of one’s body, through which these sounds
manifest. On these tubes the Chinese instrument of ten reeds was
made. When doubled they are twenty. Every direction of the activity
of the breath suggests a certain cause and a certain effect to the
hearer. From this one knows of failures and successes and of things
hidden and unknown in their preparatory stage.
This sound helps to rise higher and higher until one rises to a plane of
abstract where there is a sound called sarmad, which is full of
intoxication, joy and happiness. The hearer of this sound has no fear
if one is in the depth of the sea or is floating in the clouds, no fear of
any kind. The strength of the Almighty abides in ones heart. One is in
the world and above the world. One is in the crowd and far from it.
One sees and does not see and hears and does not hear if one wants to.
Ones happiness has no limit, ones peace is indescribable.
