ASSESSMENT TASKS
You are to assume the role of journalist who writes for the ‘Business Online’
publication which has national coverage. Your editor, Mr H. Drive, has asked you to
write a series of articles centring on the advantages and disadvantages of
businesses going online. Mr H. Drive expects you to look at several organisations
and produce a series of mini articles which reflect the importance of having online
presence.
Task One:
Understand different online business activities
Mr H. Drive has asked you to write a mini editorial on how various organisations
operate online outlining their activities. Ensure that you pick three alternative
organisations covering a spectrum of the business world.
Produce a document/PowerPoint which describes three different businesses
operating online and their activities i.e. what they do.
You must provide a description of the following:
 Range of activities
 The business sectors
 Levels of online activity i.e. passive, complementary, invitations and
interactive.
You must make sure that you choose three contrasting organisations (including
direct online selling, government services, internet services, advertising &
marketing and education), in order to show how various organisations operate
online.

Task Two:
Explain how they operate their activities online
Your next task is to put together a leaflet which explains how each of the three
organisations operates its online business. In what ways does its online presence
compliment its high street presence?
You will need to include the following:
Pass Task
The aims and objectives of each of the websites:

Types of online presence – including:




Brochure ware
Complementing its offline activities e.g. mail order, media information, enquiry
tracking, etc.
Online transactions
Providing additional/up to date information
Merit Task
Consider the similarities and differences of the online presence for all three
business organisation. How do these points tie in with the objectives of each
organisations online activities?
Distinction Task
For a business of your choice make some recommendations for the type of
objectives they should set and what activities they could provide in an online
environment.
Would any of these activities compliment what they would do in an offline
situation?

Task Three: What needs to be considered before going online?
It has come to Mr H Drives attention that many organisations do not realise what
factors need to be considered before going live with a web site. As a result he has
decided that these issues should be included in this month’s edition of “Business
Online”. You will be required to write an article which will centre on explaining
whether the business is suitable to go online, domain names, set up issues and any
technical issues that need to be taken account of.
Section One
1. Create a poster which will be the key insert in this month’s issue. This poster
will describe the main areas that need to be considered before going live with
the web site. Please include:



Whether the business type is suited to online.
Who will set up and maintain the site? In-house or outsourced.
Technical and implementation issues.
Section Two
2. Create a PowerPoint that looks at the operational risks that an organisation
trading online may face. Please include:
 Payment Security
 Unfamiliar markets
 Errors in ordering
 Loss of personal information
 Hostile attacks
 Keeping the website up to date
 Language problems/issues
 Hardware Failure.
Section Three
 Analyse the benefits to a business and its customers of conducting
business online.

Task Four: Create a simple website to meet a user need.
You must firstly think of a business idea that you would like to create an online
presence for. A shop or a service is an ideal business as it is likely to only require a
small web presence and have realistic, straight forward business objectives and
purpose.
Task 1:
Derive four business aims and objectives that the web site will help you meet.
Create your website - it must include the following:
 An original logo and banner
 Navigation Buttons to all three web pages and a link back to the HOME page
 A consistent design throughout (colours, fonts, backgrounds)

Pages must include:



Background and description of the company including contact and location
details.
A list of products and prices (catalogue).
A contact page for further information (Data Capture Form)
Task 2:
Merit Task
Look at your website, its content and design. Consider how these features have
helped you to meet your stated objectives. Will they help? How else might you best
achieve them?
Task 3:
Distinction Task
Justify the use of different construction features in the design of a website. How have
the use of some of the following, helped make your website a success?
 Fonts, colour schemes
 Special effects – marquees, roll overs etc
 Hyperlinks and attaching documents for download
 Email facilities and a Contact form
 Graphics including photographs

M3 – Explain how the website assists in achieving the aims and objectives of the business user.
D3 – Justify the use of different construction features in the design of the website.

Task Five: The Marketing benefits of being online
In a word document, explain the marketing benefits to a business of marketing their
products or services online.
Consider the following points:




An increase in market presence
A better understanding of its customers, e.g market research etc
Access to new markets e.g out of town shoppers, disabled, families,
customers from abroad, etc.
Being able to re contact customers with new offers (database marketing).
