Smith, Ed.S., Director of Curriculum and Instruction 3/23/2016 4 Revision of ELA and Math Standards Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent “Educating Georgia’s Future” gadoe.org • On August 15, 2013, the Governor directed the State Board of Education to conduct a formal evaluation of the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. • A survey opportunity was conducted by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Survey participants were asked to review and comment on each ELA and Math standard. • Survey responses were compiled and standards with less than 90% approval were submitted to working, advisory, and academic review committees for review and revision. The working committee made up of mostly current classroom teachers reviewed the survey comments submitted for each standard to determine suggestions for revision. The suggestions were then reviewed and additional suggestions were made to the standards by the Academic Review committee for final recommendations. • On November 12, 2014, the revised standards were approved by the State Board of Education to be posted for 60 days of public review and comment form November 12, 2014 through January 10, 2015. 3/23/2016 5 Over 9,600 ELA and Mathematics Survey Participants Included • • • • • • • • • Business/Industry Post-Secondary Staff Elected or Government Officials Elementary, Middle and High School Teachers Parents School Counselors Students School District/Local Administrators Other Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent “Educating Georgia’s Future” gadoe.org Overall, teachers represented a majority of the survey responses with 72%. Comments that either supported or expressed concerns related to the developmental appropriateness of the revised CCGPS 2. Comments not supportive of Common Core Standards or the revised CCGPS 3. Comments supportive of the revised CCGPS, including those with suggestions for training and resources 3/23/2016 9 ELA and Math Standards Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent “Educating Georgia’s Future” gadoe.org • Thank you to all who participated in this review and evaluation of standards. • We greatly appreciate all who provided feedback along the way through surveys and legislative and SBOE listening sessions and hearings. • The State Board of Education adopted the revised CCGPS for English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics on January 15, 2015. 3/23/2016 10 Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent “Educating Georgia’s Future” gadoe.org Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent “Educating Georgia’s Future” gadoe.org High School Mathematics Courses Foundations of Algebra Algebra I Geometry 3/23/2016 11 Foundations of Algebra 9th Grade Course Option Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent “Educating Georgia’s Future” gadoe.org • Course will meet the academic needs of 9th grade students who may have significant gaps in their mathematics achievement. • Students will be identified via K-8 data analysis. • Funding will be necessary to develop resources and training to support teachers in differentiating instruction. • Course completers will be awarded one core unit of credit. • GaDOE staff will update the SBOE quarterly relative to both enrollment data and Foundations of Algebra initiatives. • District enrollment data for this course will be reviewed before and after FTE data collection periods by the SBOE to ensure that eligibility criteria is being applied. • Performance in subsequent courses will be closely monitored at the end of each semester. 3/23/2016 12 Foundations of Algebra Diagnostic Data and Eligibility Criteria Richard Woods, Georgia’s School Superintendent “Educating Georgia’s Future” gadoe.org Step I: Middle school administrators/teachers will identify students who Did Not Meet expectations on the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade CRCT. These are students who may have significant gaps in their mathematics achievement. Step II: Middle schools will administer Individual Knowledge Assessment of Number (IKAN) diagnostic to students identified in Step I (No costs will be incurred by the state or districts.)
