Curricular Information for
Pupils and Parents / Carers
The S1 Curriculum
Progressing from P7, S1 learners continue their learning
journey through the Curriculum for Excellence experiences and
outcomes as part of their Broad General Education. Subjects
are split into eight curricular areas as shown below:

 In all areas of the curriculum learners will have the
opportunity to develop skills in the areas of literacy,
numeracy and health and wellbeing.
 Homework is an important part of learning and will be
issued regularly - each learner should use his / her
student planner to keep organised.
 There is a wide variety of opportunities for learning
outside the classroom through participation in extracurricular activities and inter-disciplinary learning events.
What Will I Learn In Art?
In S1, all learners will:
Art homework will be issued regularly throughout the year
and will take the form of design tasks, drawing skills and
researching artists using the internet.
What Will I Learn In Drama?
In S1, all learners will:
Drama Homework takes place weekly through Word of
the Week learning, research projects, diary entries,
character design and more!
What Will I Learn In English?
In S1, all learners will:
English homework will be issued regularly throughout the
year and will comprise 20 minutes reading every night as
well as structured writing and research tasks relating to
English folio work
What Will I Learn In French and Spanish?
In S1, you will have French twice a week and Spanish
once a week. You will learn to:
Homework revises classwork from each lesson. You
will have your own homework booklet for each topic
throughout the session. You will also be asked to
learn words and phrases at home.

The course is themed around the learners setting up

Modern Studies Homework will include a variety of
tasks including finding out and keeping up-to-date.
What Will I Learn In S1 Maths?
In S1 all learners will:
Maths homework will be issued on an on-going basis
and will consist of a mixture of consolidation of
classwork and formal homework exercises.
What Will I Learn In Music?
In S1, all learners will:
Music Homework will be issued regularly throughout the
year and will take the form of learning, writing, practising
or researching. The Music Homework booklet will be used
for most tasks.
What Will I Learn In Physical Education?
In S1, all learners will:
P.E. homework will be issued throughout the year.
Learners will complete theory booklets on a range of
activities - Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Dance,
Hockey, Football, Netball, Orienteering, Rugby,
Trampolining, Volleyball & Cross Country.
What is PSE?
In S1 PERSONAL AND SOCIAL EDUCATION (PSE)
a range of topics is covered mainly through tasks
and discussion in pairs and in groups. Some of
these are outlined below.
PSE Homework will be issued throughout the year and will
take the form of reading, research and discussion with
family / carers.
What Will I Learn In Religious & Moral Education?
In S1 all pupils will have
the opportunity to…

RME Homework will be issued regularly throughout the year
and will take the form of personal reflection and discussion
with someone at home, research and revision. The RME
Homework booklet will be used for most activities.
What Will I Learn In Science?
In S1 all learners will study six themed topics covering
Chemistry, Physics and Biology: Volcanoes, Science of
Optics, Eco Cottage, Healthier Scotland, Cells and
Reproduction, Lost. Learners will have the opportunity
to:

In S1, all learners will:
