US HISTORY Chapter 12 - The Jackson Era 1824-1845 Lesson 1 – Jacksonian Democracy Election of 1824 Four Candidates Andrew Jackson (TN – 99 Electoral Votes) John Quincy Adams (MA – 84 Electoral Votes) William Crawford (GA – 41 Electoral Votes) Henry Clay (KY – 37 Electoral Votes) Corrupt Bargain Jackson won popular vote by large margin No one won a majority of the electoral vote Clay (Speaker of the House) supported Adams, Adams won, Adams then named Clay his Secretary of State Lesson 1 – Jacksonian Democracy Election of 1828 By the time of the election, the Republican Party split in two National Republicans – J.Q. Adams Democratic Republicans (Democrats) – A. Jackson Campaign b/w the two was nasty – “mudslinging” was first used Jackson won in a landslide...Electoral Vote Results = 178-83 Lesson 1 – Jacksonian Democracy Jackson as President Unusual inauguration - many “commonfolk” instead of upper class known as the “People’s President” Jackson named many of his supporters to govt. positions This became known as spoils system Jackson’s Cabinet - “Kitchen Cabinet” Lesson 2 – Conflicts Over Land Moving Native Americans Americans wanted Natives east of the Mississippi River to leave Settlers wanted this land to farm President Jackson supported this Lesson 2 – Conflicts Over Land Indian Removal Act Passed in 1830 Paid many Native Americans to leave and move west Indian Territory (present-day OK) created in 1834 for Native Americans from the Southeast Lesson 2 – Conflicts Over Land Cherokee Nation Found in GA, AL, NC, TN Had treaties with federal government from the 1790’s recognizing them as a separate nation State of Georgia refused to recognize this Lesson 2 – Conflicts Over Land Cherokee Nation Cherokee go to Supreme Court and won President Jackson still removed them Journey out became known as “Trail of Tears”…many deaths & illnesses
