Template Letter.
This letter, to be effective and of value, needs to be rewritten in your own words. Have a look at
this draft, then write your own version.
Keeping it simple helps, and focus on the central theme that The Range on the edge of town has
the potential to destroy my business and the Town Centre.

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to you to object in the strongest of terms to the proposal to build a “Range” Leisure and
Household Goods Retail Store outside of the town centre on the A350, Chippenham’s current
strategic western boundary. This proposed development is completely against your own policy in
the Wiltshire Core Strategy as it refers to town centres in general and Chippenham Area Strategy in
particular, specifically paragraph 5.48. You are supposed to encourage growth and bring new life to
the Town Centre for shopping, working and entertainment. Perhaps you can explain how Wiltshire
and Chippenham Council can place so much emphasis and tax payers money on regenerating the
Town Centre and at the same time meet with Developers such as Chippenham Twenty Twenty, who
will destroy our Town Centre.
Do you not understand that this out of town development will disseminate our now thriving town
centre. The Range had a product line of 65,000 items , which is almost three times as much as the
average Tesco offer of nearly 25,000. Why don't you do the maths, and work out how many people
will be put out of work by this development and how many stores and market stalls this will close.
Why has Chippenham Council helped with the BID town process only to sell out everyone that works
in the town? Equally important, once the A350 western boundary of Chippenham is breached there
will be nothing to stop further unstructured industrial and retail development around the A350,
producing increasing detrimental effects on Town Centre retail businesses.
For the sake of Chippenham Town Centre, the 100’s of people who work there and the Store and
Stall holders you must not allow this to happen
I am therefore asking you to press Wiltshire Council Planning Department to publicly reaffirm that
the principles in the emerging Wiltshire Core Strategy will be upheld and also maintain the June
2014 Wiltshire Council planning guidance which shows the A350 as the western boundary of
Chippenham.
Yours Sincerely
List of Councillors and Officers appended below.
