INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Prince of Peace Catholic Parish Religious Education Programs! Celebrating a
Sacrament for the first time is an important step in the life of a child as a Catholic Christian. In
recognizing parents as the primary religious educators of their children, the Prince of Peace
Catholic Community Sacramental preparation relies on the cooperation of family for preparing the
children for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
PARITICIPATION IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES
Attendance at the First Holy Communion classes is extremely important in preparing the students
for reception of the Sacrament. When a class is missed, the student loses time for fellowship and
prayer as well as the material covered that day. We expect that you will make these gatherings a
priority and therefore make a sincere effort to adjust your other obligations accordingly. Students
are expected to be prepared for classes, which includes completing any assigned reading or
homework. Contact your Catechist (teacher) immediately if critical circumstance will not allow
you to attend a class. The Catechist (teacher) will determine an appropriate at-home assignment
so that he/she doesn’t fall behind in the lessons. Excessive absenteeism can affect the student’s
ability to enter fully in this important period of preparation. Students can have ONLY 3 excused
absences in order to complete the program. If you will be out of town, you must notify the
Catechist and get the work missed in advance.

SACRAMENT OF FIRST RECONCILIATION
The children will be learning about God’s compassionate love, Jesus’ warm forgiveness, and his
gift of peace to his friends during the preparation for First Reconciliation. Reinforcing each
week’s lesson at home, will give the parent an opportunity to anticipate some questions their
child might ask, and to share some of their insights about Reconciliation and forgiveness. These
weeks of preparation can lead to many years of comfortable discussions as their child continues
to grow and learn from God, from their parents, and from the Parish faith community. During
Mass, parents should help their child recognize the parts of the Mass in which we regularly ask
forgiveness and make peace as a regular part of worship.
During their classroom preparation, the children will be learning the proper procedure for
receiving Reconciliation (Penance). Parents should review the procedure with their child
periodically to insure they understand. The children should also know the Ten Commandments,
the Eight Beatitudes, the Hail Mary, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Act of Contrition.
Children, as well as adults, are naturally spiritual and are drawn to God. As they approach the
Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time, children are in the early stages of their spiritual
journey. All family members are privileged to journey with their children as they prepare for the
celebration of this Sacrament. RCL Benziger’s Reconciliation Family Guide will guide you in
helping your child understand both what we believe as Catholics and how to live out those beliefs.
The focus of your preparation is not only for your child’s first celebration of this Sacrament, but,
more importantly, for a lifetime of regular participation in this Sacrament of God’s love and mercy.
Sacrament preparation is not only about cognitive learning, it is also a period of spiritual
preparation.

HOLY COMMUNION?

WHY DOES THE CHURCH INVOLVE PARENTS IN SACRAMENT PREPARATION?
The Roman Catholic Church views your role as parents in the religious formation of your children
as both a privilege and an obligation. When you presented your child to the church for Baptism,
you were distinctly reminded that you have the responsibility of “training your child in the
practice of the faith”. This obligation and privilege extend to Sacrament preparation. It is
important to remember that it has been within your family that your children have first come to
faith. It is within your family that your children will continue to live out faith and witness the daily
example of Catholic believers.
ROLES OF THE FAMILY:
***Encourage family prayer at home.
***Invite parents to join in with classes.
***Help children by modeling a willingness to say, “I’m sorry.” Confess often.
***Help children develop practical peacemaking skills.
***Attend Mass every Saturday or Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation.
***Ensure children are in RE class every learning session.

PRAYERS
STATION #1 BLESSED SACRAMENT ROOM
BLESSED SACRAMENT ROOM:
A designated area of a chapel where the Eucharist is reserved in
the Tabernacle.
Most Roman Catholic Churches have a
tabernacle. Because military chapels are multi-faith chapels, a
special room is designated to reserve the Eucharist.
CRUCIFIX:
An image or figure of Jesus on the cross. The cross reminds us
that Jesus died on the cross to forgive our sins and to raise us to
a new spiritual life. When pain and sorrow get us down, we look
to Christ Crucified to be with us and help us.
ALTAR:
The place where the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross is made
present through the Mass. Since ancient times, an altar is the
place to offer acceptable sacrifice to God. The only acceptable
sacrifice that takes away sin is Jesus.
BOW:
An act of bending the head or upper body as a sign of respect or
greeting. Acknowledge and respect the altar with a bow towards
the Crucifix.
GENUFLECTION:
An act made by bending the right knee to the ground signifying
adoration with the sign of the cross and is reserved for the most
Blessed Sacrament (Holy Eucharist).
TABERNACLE:
The sacred place in which the Holy Eucharist is reserved. The
light by the tabernacle reminds us that Christ is present in the
tabernacle. This is a very appropriate place to pray.
PRAYER:
A conversation with the invisible God, the angels and the saints.
The raising of one’s mind and heart to God in various forms of
prayer. (Petition, Thanksgiving, Praise, etc)
ADORATION:
The prayerful submission of a believer to the greatness God in
prayer. Respectful silence accompanies one’s prayer in the
presence of Christ.
HOLY WATER:
Water blessed by a priest for Baptism. Water, when used to bless
persons, places, or objects is always a reminder of Baptism and
the commitment of Christ to a believer and a believer to Christ.
ETERNAL FLAME:
(See tabernacle above). In accordance with traditional custom,
near the tabernacle is a sanctuary lamp to remind us Christ is
present.
STATION #2 PENANCE PRACTICE IN SANCTUARY
INDIVIDUAL RITE FOR RECONCILIATION FROM FAITH FORMATION
RECONCILIATION WORKBOOK
EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE:
We prepare ourselves to celebrate this Sacrament
spending time praying.
GREETING WITH PRIEST:
The priest greets us. Together, we pray the Sign of the
Cross.
“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit. Amen.”
Priest says, “May God, who has enlightened every heart,
help you to know your sins and trust in his mercy.
Penitant says, “Amen”.
READING THE WORD OF GOD:
The Priest may read a story from the Bible to you or
welcome you with words from the Bible.
CONFESSION OF SINS AND ACCEPTANCE OF A PENANCE:
CONFESSION OF SINS:
Penitant tells his/her sins to the priest. “Bless me Father for
I have sinned. This is my first confession.”
ACCEPTANCE OF OUR PENANCE:
After we confess our sins, the priest talks to us.
PRAYER OF SORROW:
Penitant prays a prayer of sorrow, the Act of Contrition. “My
God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing
to do wrong and failing to do good. I have sinned against
you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend,
with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid
whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ
suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have
mercy.”
ABSOLUTION:
The Priest extends his hands over our head or places his
hands on one’s head as he prays the prayer of absolution.
The Priest makes the sign of the cross over our head and
says, “…and I absolve you from your sins in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Penitant
makes the sign of the cross as the priest blesses you. Then you
respond with, “Amen”.
PRAISE OF GOD:
God forgives us as the father in the Bible story forgave his
younger son. The Priest will say, “Give thanks to the Lord,
for he is good.” Penitant responds with, “His mercy endures
for ever.”
DISMISSAL:
The Priest sends us forth, saying in similar words, “Go in
peace, and proclaim to the world the wonderful works of
God who has brought you salvation.”
STATION #3 PRAYERS IN MPR
SIGN OF THE CROSS:
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
ACT OF CONTRITION:
My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do
wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should
love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to
sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus
Christ suffered and died for us. In His Name. My God have mercy.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom
come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. Amen.
HAIL MARY:
Hail Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among
women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother
of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen
CLOSING PRAYER
Arrange the group in a circle, with a candle in the center of the circle.
Reader:
Jesus told us that he is the light of the world. We have a candle
burning to remind ourselves that his love is always with us, even
when we sin. Lord, we try to be good, but sometimes we forget
or we get too tired and we are selfish.
All:
We are sorry, Lord.
Reader:
We want to love each other the way you love us, but sometimes
we leave people out of our games or say unkind things to them.
All:
We are sorry, Lord.
Reader:
You have given us our families to teach us about your love, but
sometimes we fail to treat them with respect.
All:
We are sorry, Lord.
Reader:
You have given us a beautiful world and have asked us to take
care of it, but sometimes we are destructive or wasteful.
All:
We are sorry, Lord.
Reader:
All people are your children, but sometimes it bothers us when
someone is different from us and we fail to treat them as a
brother or sister of Christ.
All:
We are sorry, Lord.
Reader:
A long, long time ago, Jesus taught his friends a special prayer.
Let’s join hands and say the prayer that Jesus gave us.
All:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy
Kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we
forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
SACRAMENT OF HOLY FIRST COMMUNION
Celebrating the Sacrament of Holy First Communion for the first time children must have
“sufficient knowledge and careful preparation so as to understand the mystery of Christ according
to their capacity” (Cod of Canon Law 9-13). The children are encouraged to explore some of the
many “gifts” that God has given them, for example; peace, forgiveness, friendship, and creation.
The children are asked to think about what Jesus (through scripture) is teaching us about each
gift, and what they can do in their lives to share and use each gift well. We reflect on God’s
greatest gift – that of Jesus. The children are encouraged to think about what receiving Jesus in
Holy Communion means for them and what changes it should make in their own lives.
During their classroom preparation, the children will be learning the proper procedure for
receiving Communion. Parents should review this procedure with their child periodically to insure
they understand. The children should also know the Seven Sacraments, the names of the
Apostles, and how to make the sign of the cross correctly.
RCL Benziger’s Eucharist Family Guide will guide you in helping your child understand both what
we believe as Catholics and how to live out those beliefs. The focus of your child’s preparation is
not only the celebration of First Eucharist but, more importantly, your child’s preparation for a
lifetime of being nourished at the table of the Lord.
MANDATORY HOLY FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETING
The Mandatory Holy First Communion Parent Meeting will be held on Sunday 23 February 2014 –
12 noon at the Hickam Chapel Center in the Multi Purpose Room. A parent of a First Holy
Communion must attend the mandatory meeting.
HOLY FIRST COMMUNION BANNERS
Holy First Communion Banner Kits will be distributed at the Mandatory Holy First Communion
Parent Meeting. Everything needed to assemble the banner for the student is provided. They will
be due at the Holy First Communion Workshop. The Holy First Communion Banners will be hung in
the sanctuary for the Holy First Communion Mass. The banner must include the child’s first name
and the date 10 May 2014. Your personal First Holy Communion Banner will be a visual sign of the
ways you experience God’s love for you. The symbols of the Eucharistic gifts of bread and wine,
the cross on which Jesus showed his love for us and the heart signifying the love we share are all
worthy signs for your banner. These symbols of God’s love and blessing should be very
meaningful to you.
MANDATORY HOLY FIRST COMMUNION WORKSHOP
RCL Benziger’s Eucharist book and First Eucharist Worksheet are due in full completion at the
First Communion Workshop.
The First Communion Workshop is mandatory for the student and
one parent in attendance. The First Holy Communion Workshop will be held on Sunday 27 April
2014 at 1200 at the JBPHH Hickam Chapel Center.
MANDATORY HOLY FIRST COMMUNION REHEARSAL
There is a mandatory First Holy Communion rehearsal scheduled for Friday 09 May, 2013 at the
JBPHH Hickam Chapel Center at 1700 for the First Communion students and one of their parents.
HOLY FIRST COMMUNION DRESS CODE
Special clothes highlight a special occasion; however, the coming of Jesus is the most important
part of the day. Please keep your child and family focused on the fact that the Sacrifice of Jesus
on the Cross is the “Perfect Sacrifice” and thus it is perpetuated with the Mass and Jesus’ giving
of His Flesh for the life of the world in Holy Communion. Girls dress like a bride and boys dress
like a groom. This reminds them that when they receive their First Holy Communion, their soul is
united to Christ like a bride and groom united in matrimony.
PLEASE FOLLOW THE DRESS CODE.
GIRLS: White Dress with back and shoulders covered; No spaghetti straps;
Sleeveless allowed, but would prefer at least capped sleeves; Neckline should come
close to covering the collar
Bone; Length: below the knee; white veil optional; No purses or gloves, please;
Dress shoes required (No sneakers)
BOYS: Suit or dress pants with a dress shirt; Plain tie (no designs) is required;
Dress shoes required (No sneakers)
MAY PROCESSION AND MAY CROWNING
All Prince of Peace Catholic Community children participate in the May Procession to be held
Sunday 04 May 2014 at the 1030 Mass. Children wear their First Holy Communion attire to the
May Procession. The Director of Religious Education, Father Peter, picks a boy and a girl to be
Blessed Mother and Carry the Cross. The kids chosen must be onsite by 10:00AM. If your child is
late then another child will be chosen to take his/her place. The 2014 Confirmation Class will be
coordinating the May Procession as part of their Parish Service Hours Commitments.
PRINCE OF PEACE
EUCHARIST BOOK COMPLETION
DUE AT HOLY FIRST COMMUNION WORKSHOP
Children, as well as adults, are naturally spiritual and are drawn toward God. As they approach
the Sacrament of the Eucharist, children are in the early stages of their spiritual journey. All
family members are privileged to journey with their children as they prepare for receiving the
Sacrament of Eucharist. RCL Benziger’s Eucharist Family Guide will guide you in helping your
child understand both what we believe as Catholics and how to live out those beliefs. The focus
of your child’s preparation is not only the celebration of first Eucharist but, more importantly, your
child’s preparation for a lifetime of being nourished at the table of the Lord.

WHY DOES THE CHURCH INVOLVE PARENTS IN SACRAMENT PREPARATION?
The Roman Catholic Church views your role as parents in the religious formation for your children
as both a privilege and an obligation. When you presented your child to the church for Baptism,
you were distinctly reminded that you have the responsibility “of training your child in the
practice of the faith”. This obligation and privilege extend to Sacrament preparations. It is
important to remember that it has been within your family that your children have first come to
faith. It is within your family that your children will continue live out faith and witness the daily
example of Catholic believers.
