The driving reason for the Desktop Deployment Planning Service is to assist Microsoft’s Software Assurance customers in the deployment of Office 2010 and Microsoft Windows 7 to new and existing workstations in their enterprise. In order to accomplish this goal, Microsoft has provided the DDPS 2011 delivery consultant with a series of presentations, planning tools, and technologies to convey the knowledge required to perform a successful, standardized, and highly automated desktop deployment. This guide will: Identify several baseline skills that a consultant should possess in order to successfully deliver a Desktop Deployment Planning Service engagement Identify the recommended tools and technologies that a consultant should bring with them to the Desktop Deployment Planning Service engagement Provide guidance for the delivery of an Office-centric engagement for those organizations who wish to focus the bulk of a DDPS engagement on issues related to deploying a standardized configuration of Office 2010 DDPS program material is updated as needed and can be located here: http://www.microsoftddps.com Reminder: Submit your deliverable!!! In order to get compensated as a vendor you MUST submit a Word formatted document that contains the customer-specific deployment plan. This can either be one of the DDPS provided templates or one of your own design. Failure to submit an appropriate DDPS deployment plan for each customer engagement can result in termination from the DDPS program. As of December 1st, 2010, all Partners will be required to complete and upload the Planning Services Completion Report as well as the DDPS deployment plan to VVR as part of the voucher redemption and payment process. The Planning Services Completion Report is a new required deliverable that will not only allow Microsoft to monitor the quality of engagements, but will also provide valuable insights for future program enhancements. As with all required deliverables, failure to upload the Planning Services Completion Report will result in suspension from the program until all required deliverables have been received. How to Submit DDPS Deliverables - Overview When the partner has completed the DDPS engagement, they are ready to begin the process to receive payment from Microsoft. Follow the below guidance to submit the Planning Services Completion Report and invoice for payment. Submit Planning Services Completion Report, attach DDPS Deployment Plan Partners must submit required deliverables for the engagement using the Planning Services Completion Report InfoPath Form. Page 5 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners Required deliverables are defined as the output or result of the deployment engagement with the customer (detailed in the Terms and Conditions for DDPS). Partners will be required to use a Live ID to open the form. Important Note! The Planning Services Completion Report will need to be saved locally to be uploaded in the next step. 1. Upload Saved Planning Services Completion Report in VVR Tool to Redeem your Voucher Partners must upload the saved Planning Services Completion Report with the attached customer deliverable for the engagement in the VVR Tool. Microsoft will review these deliverables for proof of a unique engagement per customer and for adherence to the Terms and Conditions. Failure to provide unique deliverables will impact the partner's future participation in the program. The partner redeems the voucher at the end of the engagement by submitting the required deliverables through the Voucher Validation and Redemption (VVR) Tool, notifying Microsoft that the services associated with that voucher have been delivered to the customer. Once the partner has redeemed the voucher, the partner has the ability to: Email a confirmation of the voucher redemption View the confirmation in a Printer Friendly format View the confirmation in Excel Watch as Microsoft employees walk you through redeeming a voucher in the VVR Tool in this video. DDPS can be delivered by a single resource in many cases, but partners may need to use multiple resources if a single consolidated skill set is not available. Often a winning team will use a combination of the skills needed to succeed in customer satisfaction which leads to further engagements for the solution. The consultants should have direct experience and in-depth knowledge in the following areas: Primary Technical Skills: Additional Technical Skills: Office 2010 familiarity Windows 7 Enterprise MDOP Windows XP Professional Microsoft Deployment 2010 (MDT) Windows Automation Installation Kit (AIK) System Center Configuration Manager Application compatibility Application virtualization Software deployment Image generation and deployment Windows Deployment Services Windows Server 2008 XML, HTA, VBS Active Directory Workstation management and configuration (Group Policy) Application and operating system migrations Windows pre-installation environment (WinPE) SQL 2005 or SQL 2008 Visual Basic Scripting Any known products that will be affected by the migration Security configuration of the workstation Patch management Office migration Networking Internet Explorer 8/9 Office 2010 familiarity Table 1 Primary and additional consultant skills for DDPS engagement 3.2 Office DDPS Consultant Skill Set Requirements The Desktop Deployment Planning Service may in some cases focus specifically on Office planning and deployment. A successful team will have a combination of the skills in general deployment areas as well as specialization in Office. The following skill areas are recommended in those scenarios. Page 9 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners Product Required skills Office 2010 Deployment Office 2010 Development Office 2010 Application Features Enterprise Deployment Processes Install process, configuration files, tools, and enterprise settings such as Office security and Outlook profile Office source management and configuration Office Multilanguage architecture and deployment methods Enterprise deployment methods Office 2010 Application Compatibility concepts Running Office Migration Planning Manager (OMPM) Office 2010 Document file format concepts Office 2010 Application built in compatibility features such as Compatibility Mode and Code Inspector For testing and remediation of custom Office solutions it is recommended a consultant with developer experience be utilized. Knowledge of Visual Basic for Applications and the object models of Office applications are required to remediate legacy code design issues. Knowledge of Visual Studio Tools for Office and Visual Studio .NET programming languages and concepts may also be required if solutions are developed in those developer platforms. When conducting Office deployment and/or application remediation projects, it is often common to encounter specific Office application technical issues or proactive questions. Therefore it is beneficial for consultants to have a working knowledge of Office application features. Application compatibility remediation requires knowledge of Office application features and how custom solutions interact with them. Changes to Office applications and object models are thoroughly documented in the Office Resource Kit (ORK) Knowledge of products such as ConfigMgr is often necessary. It is also common to need knowledge of scripted installs when no enterprise deployment technology is available Table 2 Office skills for DDPS engagement 3.3 Materials to bring with you In order to assure a successful Desktop Deployment Planning Service the consultant should bring several tools and technologies with them to engagement. 3.3.1 Hardware Requirements The bare minimum hardware requirements that the consultant should possess in order to perform a successful Desktop Deployment Planning Service engagement are displayed in the following table: Hardware Type Minimum Hardware Specifications Laptop Athlon XP or better 4 GB or more RAM Page 10 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners 160 GB Hard Drive External (USB) hard drive At least 1000 GB, USB 2.0 hard drive, preferably external powered Table 3 Recommended consulting hardware requirements for DDPS engagement As the consultant may be running multiple virtual machines as part of DDPS 2011 delivery, the more powerful the laptop the better. 4GB of RAM is a must (8GB+ preferred); as virtual machines are typically resources intensive. An external USB hard drive is also a highly recommended for the engagements. The virtual hard drives comprising the consultants’ demonstration environment should be stored and run from the external USB hard drive; this will improve the performance of a virtualized demonstration environment, A few other pieces of hardware that assist with the proof of concept portion of the Desktop Deployment Planning Service are as follows; a bus powered 1000 GB or larger USB 2.0 hard drives2, a 16GB or larger USB 2.0 pen drive. These devices assist in the process of moving files from the consultant’s laptop and virtualized environment to the customer’s lab. Additionally, the USB sticks can be used to develop and demonstrate bootable USB Media Deployment Points. As well as the requirements for the delivery consultants virtualized demonstration environments, a projector, whiteboard and a conference room will are normally required for presentation portions of the engagement. 3.3.1 Proof of Concept Considerations In order to provide a comprehensive demonstration and to answer in depth questions during the Architectural Design Session portion of the engagement, a functional virtual environment should be available to the delivery consultant on their laptop. This can be on HyperV, Virtual PC or 3rd party virtualization solutions. To ensure the consultant’s technical prowess with all of the technologies presented during the Desktop Deployment Planning Service engagement, the consultant should build out a virtualized environment that allows for the demonstration of the various deployment technologies including: Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) System Center Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr) Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 (SQL) Zero Touch Installation (ZTI) Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Other technologies as required The delivery consultants should utilize the Hydration POC Guide document for guidance in building their own portable environment as well as customer leave behind environments. The hydration solution is the preferred way for the delivery consultant to build out the customers’ lab Page 11 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners using MDT technologies and solutions. This approach will maximize the time during the engagement to work with customer deployment scenarios rather than spending time on building the required infrastructure manually. Please obtain the POC Hydration toolkit and associated guidance from: https://connect.microsoft.com/jumpstartpoc Page 12 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners 4 DDPS ENGAGEMENT AND DELIVERY FRAMEWORK 4.1 Overview DDPS 2011 has been designed with the Microsoft Solution Selling Process (MSSP). And Microsoft Solutions Frame in Microsoft Solutions Framework The MSSP framework includes Solution Development, Solution (Strategy) Briefing, Architectural Design Session, and Proof of Concept engagements. A description is provided here Solution Development - A customer engagement in which participants identify known and latent customer IT and business pains related to their infrastructure and other capabilities. The goals are to qualify these opportunities as well as to discover others through a capability gap analysis. The Power Sponsor must be identified. Solution Development aligns to the Qualify and Develop stages in MSSP. Solution (Strategy) Briefing - A customer engagement designed to garner Power Sponsor validation and approval for a high-level, solution value proposition. Participants align relevant supporting evidence, along with high-level customer specific estimates of investment costs and benefits in order to refine the value proposition for the proposed solution and stakeholders. It enables the opportunity team to further diagnose pains of business decision makers, explore impact, and visualize solution capabilities. Solution Briefing aligns to the Solution stage of the MSSP. NOTE: When establishing the agenda for the engagement, it is a best practice to ensure that the executive decision makers and members of the Microsoft account team (if applicable) attend the Strategy Briefing Session. Architecture Design Session - A customer engagement that enables joint partner/customer design of a high-level technical solution based on the shared buying vision established during the Solution Briefing. This solution is then used to refine the value proposition in the Solution Proposal, create a deployment plan and bill of materials. ADS align to the Solution stage of MSSP. This results in the following organization of deployment tools and topics: Plan: Infrastructure Remediation, Securing the Desktop, Application Compatibility, User State Migration, Office Migration and Planning Manager (OMPM), Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP), System Center Configuration Manager Build: Imaging, Office 2010 customization (OCT), Windows 7 customization (WAIK/MDT), Application shims (ACT), System Center Configuration Manager Deploy: Deployment Process (Lite Touch, Zero Touch Installation), , System Center Configuration Manager Operations Readiness Operate: Patch Management, Group Policy Management, Optimized Desktop Proof of Concept - A structured customer engagement that enables the activity owner to prove solution capability and mitigate customer-identified risks by demonstrating agreed points for the technical and value proposition. Proofs of Concept (PoC) results are used to Page 13 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners refine the deployment plan, architecture blueprint and value proposition. This allows the team to overcome final sales barriers. PoCs align to the Proof stage of the MSSP. Engagement Summary - All engagements should end with an Engagement Summary session, which is a session to formally deliver the design and any plan project timelines, resources, or phases. All key stakeholders should be invited to this final session, including stakeholders from among those who attended the Strategy Briefing Session and the Architectural Design Session. This is because the session ties together the technical decisions with the business drivers for the solution. The appropriate recommendations document should be used for each of the following items: Brief the customer on relevant Microsoft Product Roadmaps and discuss how those roadmaps might impact the project using the Deployment Roadmap presentation. Review the Business Drivers and Risks identified during the Strategy Briefing Session. Review the Requirements of the solution as recorded during the ADS and make any adjustments now that the customer has been educated on the feature areas. Finalize and document Design Choices that support the solution chosen. Review and record any Outstanding Questions to ensure proper follow up. Finalize and document the high level Solution that will accomplish the Business Drivers identified and address the risks identified during the Strategy Briefing Session Establish the project delivery model that will be used, including project timelines, delivery model (such as the MSF team framework), and delivery framework using the Project Delivery presentation. When establishing the agenda for the Summary Session it is a best practice to ensure that the original stakeholders and the key customer technical subject matter experts attend the summary session. DDPS 2011 engagement may include any combinations of these types of activities during the delivery – each customer, each opportunity may require different lengths of each of these key activities. Page 14 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners 4.2 Solution Development The DDPS collateral provides you with presentation and delivery materials that have been produced with deep involvement by Microsoft Services and product groups as well as marketing and readiness teams. Figure 1 Microsoft Deployment focus areas These presentations are provided to help facilitate discussion with customers. While they may be delivered in a formal setting they are expected to more frequently be used to support an informal discussion. As many experienced presenters prefer to limit their use of presentation slides most presentations are divided into two sections Core slide content MDT wheel / process – Enables the presenter to focus and emphasize the relationship of Microsoft deployment tools and transition conversations Agenda – Sample agenda structures covering tools, technologies and processes. Infrastructure Optimization – Provides solution options for the feature team area in the context of the infrastructure optimization model (basic, standardized, rationalized, dynamic) Example whiteboard slides – One or more example whiteboard slides provide samples of components that might be drawn for a unique customer environment Proposed solution – Guides a discussion on a side-by-side current or proposed solution design Documentation – Helps ensure the feature area discussion is captured in the recommendations document Current solution – Guides a discussion and whiteboard session on the current feature team solution Page 15 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners Supporting detail slides People, process, and technology slides The core PowerPoint content is designed to accelerate preparation and delivery. However, a successful DDPS 2011 Engagement is also dependent on a presenter’s ability to host informal technical architecture discussions and provide prescriptive guidance for deployment and management. Presenters are commonly expected to whiteboard potential solutions and a solid understanding of the technology being discussed, as well as practical customer experience, is necessary. Page 16 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners 5 SUMMARY DDPS is designed to be flexible enough to be relevant to a wide variety of customer scenarios and delivery requirements. One of those scenarios is helping customers to deploy only Office (for a variety of reasons). While deploying Windows and Office together provides a compelling benefit for new, refresh and replace scenarios (in the MDT context), it is understood that many customers will have need to do Office only to legacy managed and unmanaged environments. It is expected that the guidance in this section will assist the DDPS delivery consultant in understanding how the existing DDPS materials can be focused on Office specific issues, requirements and recommendations for customers. Page 17 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners 6 A PPENDIX A - P LANNING AND D EPLOYING O FFICE 2010 WITH DDPS Many organizations may wish to focus the bulk of a DDPS engagement on issues related to deploying a standardized configuration of Office 2010. This section serves as an appendix to the core DDPS collateral and identifies recommended strategies for delivering an Office focused DDPS session. It remains the responsibility of the delivery consultant to review the entire DDPS Delivery Guide for complete guidance on this topic. Much like a complete desktop migration or deployment, an Office only deployment requires some key activities and decisions. For the most part, these follow the format established in the DDPS collateral: Plan - understanding the target environment, deployment requirements and desired Office configuration Build – creating the customer specific Office configuration, deployment infrastructure and scripts Deploy – the actual process or project to distribute Office bits to the client desktops Operate – managing, securing, patching and supporting the Office implementation after deployment Delivery consultants may find it difficult to fill a 10 or 15 day DDPS engagement with Office only content, however the strategy here is to focus more heavily on the security, management, and virtualization issues associated with Office 2010 while also covering the basic MDT guidance around deployment. Customers still need a deployment infrastructure, they still need to package or prepare Office and they still need to manage Office. The remainder of this section will describe how to segment out the various components of the DDPS collateral that can be used for an Office only planning and deployment engagement under DDPS. 6.1 Delivery Guidance 6.1.1 Pre Engagement Questionnaire Like any other DDPS the delivery consultant and/or the customers partner account team should conduct a preflight briefing via conference call 1-2 weeks before the anticipated kick-off., At this time the customer should have completed the Pre Flight Questionnaire (PFQ) document to assist in identifying (or confirming) that the customer will require extra emphasis on Office 2010 deployment. Key indicators may include the following: Already deployed their base OS with Office 2003 and want to follow up with Office 2010 deployment May want to upgrade Office 2007 to Office 2010 SP2 May want to upgrade older versions of Office in place May want to standardize unsanctioned configurations or components Want to standardize both their modern desktops (Windows 7 + Office 2010) and their legacy desktops (2000/XP + older versions of Office) on a single Office version Page 18 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners The Pre Engagement Questionnaire (PEQ) is used to determine the high level Business and Technical requirements and what infrastructure the customer currently has in place or available to support the deployment. During the PEQ determine the overall scope of the Strategy Briefing Session (attendees, location, duration, etc.). 6.1.2 Strategy Briefing Session After determining in the PEQ that Office will be a primary focus for the DDPS the very next thing you’ll need to do is modify some of the content. It is generally recommended that you go ahead and plan to use your customized Strategy Briefing Session (SBS) overview deck with no more that 1-2 slides covering the major benefits and functionality of the MDT feature team guidance. This is important as there are still some core opportunities to discuss: PLAN o Office Migration and Planning Tools – OMPM o Office Enterprise Assessment Tool – OEAT3 o Office Code Compatibility Inspector - OCCI4 o Office Security Guide – OSG o Application Compatibility Toolkit – ACT o User State Migration Tool - USMT BUILD o Integration of Office 2010 and the MDT Workbench o Office Customization Tool – OCT DEPLOY o Deployment–ready infrastructures o ConfigMgr/SMS, Application Virtualization, Group Policy, Logon scripts, etc. o Office Compatibility Pack OPERATE o Office management strategies and tools – GPO, ADMX It is recommended that you demonstrate or discuss some or all of the following during the SBS: Using the MAP/OEAT tools to identify Office 2010 capable platforms Using the Application Compatibility Tool kit to identify the various Office versions in production Identifying Office compatibility issues with Office Migration Planning Manager and/or OEAT Using Office Converter Tool evaluate conversion of Office files to the XML format Using ConfigMgr inventory to identify hardware platforms and deployed Office versions 3 OEA primary purpose is to identify installed add-ins and may provide their known compatibility with 2010 applications. These assessment tools can help consultants and customers assess current system compatibility readiness. The OCCI is another assessment tool to assist IT pro’s, developers, help desk or even end users with analyzing VBA or VSTO add-ins for potential compatibility issues. 4 Page 19 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners Using the Asset Inventory Service to identify hardware and Office versions for remote or unmanaged computers Adding Office 2010 to the MDT Workbench as a core image component MDT Workbench and Office Customization Tool integration Customizing Office 2010 with the Office Customization Tool Deploying Office 2010 with ConfigMgr (or Systems Management Server) Deploying Office 2010 with Application Virtualization Deploying Office 2010 with Group Policy It is important to note that not all of the demonstrations and supporting scripts may exist within the DDPS collateral. It is expected that any DDPS delivery consultant should be able to find and or create these demos as part of basic delivery capabilities. 6.1.3 Architectural Design Sessions In general for Office focused DDPS engagements there will often be a reduced focus on imaging or deployment technologies. For example the customer may already be using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit to create and deploy desktop images or they may have another 3 rd party tool. As a result you will need to adjust the DDPS agenda to focus on Plan/Build/Deploy/Operate with respect to Office 2010. That said, the following ADS decks are recommended: Deployment Overview (optional) – depending on the makeup of attendees for the Strategy Briefing Session versus the Architecture Design Session you may need to revisit the Deployment Overview deck at a more technical level. Again this should be 1-2 slides on each area of the MDT wheel. Activation - Make sure to include a review of the Office 2010 Activation process as it is totally new, and requires a KMS infrastructure. Office Deployment – this deck contains the bulk of the Office Guidance for DDPS. This deck can serve as the core or you can go through the supporting decks below and build to a summary using the Office Deployment as a big picture. You’ll want to emphasize the Office Migration and Planning Manager (OMPM) and Office Conversion Toolkit (OCT) extras in this deck as most customers moving to Office 2010 will need to be aware of document format changes. Plan to cover XML impact by addressing the “when to convert my docs” question and when to deploy the Office Compatibility Package to down-level versions of Office. Be sure to consider the variety of options for delivering Office to end users: o Thick – as part of the base image (don’t forget pre-cached) o Thin – via Terminal Services, Citrix Presentation Manager, Server 2008 Presentation Services o Virtualized – Windows 7 Enterprise Centralized Desktop (VECD), Diskless PC, Application Virtualization o Side By Side –customers may have a need to run older versions alongside Office 2010. Application Virtualization is a good option here o Viewers only – some customers may have environments (POS, task worker, etc.) that only need to read Office documents – viewers and Office Web Components may be viable solutions for these scenarios Page 20 Windows 7 and Office 2010 delivery guide for consultants, Desktop Deployment Planning Service 2011 Prepared by DDPS Partner Organization "last modified on 23 Mar. 16, Rev 1 Prepared for DDPS Delivery Partners Core Infrastructure – hide some of the slides to focus on inventory tools in place or available and the readiness of the network to store and or deploy an Office package. The presentation material is to understand what the customer has in place now and recommendations to core infrastructure which may include adjustments to core services that may have an impact or impede successful deployment of Office. Office compatibility – the OEA, OCCI, and the Application Compatibility Remediation Guide are the preferred tools and processes to address Office 2010 compatibility. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee624356(office.14).aspx for more details Application Compatibility – focus the deck on the core inventory features of ACT. Namely deployed versions of Office and in a pinch its hardware inventory. Remember that you are looking for add-ins too. Your goal with this deck is to understand what they have deployed currently both in terms of versions of Office and any integrated applications. While ACT doesn’t necessarily show dependencies or call out Office add-ins, having a manifest simplifies identification. Imaging – focus the decks and the discussions of options and benefits of adding Office 2010 to their core image. Be sure to highlight MDT/Office 2010 integration here. Your goal with this deck is to ensure that the customer understands how Office only deployments should be synchronized with core imaging processes. USMT – this topic area with respect to Office 2010 should focus on the fact that USMT already knows how to handle most aspects of an Office to Office deployment. Your goal here is to help the customer understand and identify any Office specific settings that may need to be retained for Office only deployments. Packaging – this topic area may not be required unless there is Office 2010 specific add-ins which require packaging or can’t be chained as part of an Office install. The goal here is to help identify how Office 2010 will be deployed (ConfigMgr/SMS, GPO, logon script, 3rd party software delivery).
