Math Models Course Syllabus
Course Description: Students use ideas from algebra, geometry, probability and
statistics to solve realistic applied problems. Concrete, algorithmic, graphical and
technological tools and variety of representations will be used to solve problems.
Course Objectives:



Apply mathematics to problems

Communicate mathematical ideas,
arising in everyday life, society, and
reasoning, and their implications
the workplace. Use information and
using multiple representations,
resources involving the school and
community Use current day world
events Use online resources to bring
outside resources into classroom
including symbols, diagrams, graphs,
and language as appropriate.
Create and use representations to
organize, record, and communicate
environment.
Use a problem-solving model that
incorporates analyzing given
information, formulating a plan or
strategy, determining a solution,
justifying the solution, and
evaluating the problem-solving
process and the reasonableness of
the solution.
Analyze mathematical relationships
to connect and communicate
mathematical ideas.



mathematical ideas.
Display, explain, and justify
mathematical ideas and arguments
using precise mathematical language
in written or oral communication.
Select tools, including real objects,
manipulatives, paper and pencil, and
technology as appropriate, and
techniques, including mental math,
estimation, and number sense as
appropriate, to solve problems.

Homework will be given regularly to ensure students practice the skills they are
learning in class. Repetition is very important in mathematics, therefore students
must keep in practice. Students will normally be given class time to start their
assignments. Some work however, may need to be completed at home.
Quizzes
15%
Short quizzes will be given throughout each unit to ensure everyone is up to speed
with the class and nobody is getting left behind.
Tests
40%
A test will be given at the conclusion of each unit to provide accurate feedback
that students are obtaining the information in class. Retests may be given upon
written letter requests.
Projects
10%
Students will keep all notes, homework, tests, quizzes, tests, etc. in their binder.
Contents of the binder will be checked at the end of each six-weeks. Other
Projects may be assigned to help further connect math to the real world.
Knowledge Check/Daily Grades 10%
Students’ knowledge will be checked daily in order to ensure material is being
learned and an adequate pace of the class is kept.
Class policies/Rules
 Everyone will be seated in the proper seat when the bell rings.


Everyone will bring his/her binder, pencil, etc. to class every day.
Class begins immediately following the tardy bell. You will need to be seated
and begin your bell work.

Students will not adjust chairs, thermostats, or anything else in the
classroom unless directed to do so by the teacher.


Class is not over until dismissed by the teacher.
All vandalism is prohibited.

Clean your area at the end of class. Keep the room neat and clean.


Books must be covered.
Students are only allowed on the whiteboard when instructed to do so.



Students will show respect towards teacher, peers, facilities, and equipment.
A hall pass is required when leaving the room.
There will be no usage of the telephone, cell phones, head phones, or any

electronics during class without permission.
No profanity or bullying will be tolerated.

Water and healthy foods will be permitted unless it is messy or becomes a
distraction to the class. *Note: this privilege may be taken away.

Students will exhibit their best personal, mental, physical, and social health
behavior.

LATE WORK: Each day an assignment is late 20 points will be subtracted
from the highest possible grade. I will not accept late-work after 2 days. On
the third day, it is considered “missing.” Students with “missing” work will be

required to serve lunch detention. If problem persists, ISS or further
measures may be taken.
Tutorials: I will be available most days before school. Please make
arrangements at least the day before.
