Lesson 1 Vocabulary The Meaning of Clothing and Fashion Vocabulary - 1 Adornment Attractive decoration (well put together outfit) Examples: Wearing jewelry that compliments your outfit Belt, jacket, scarf, jewelry Status – a person’s position or rank compared to others Culture – a set of social norms and values Dress codes – written or unwritten rules of appropriate attire Modesty – covering the body according to the code of decency of a particular culture or society. Vocabulary - 1 Values – Ideas, beliefs, and material items that are important to an individual. Attitudes – the feelings or reactions to people, things, or ideas. Needs – Things a person must have for existence or survival Wants - Things desired for personal satisfaction Vocabulary - 1 Individuality – Self-expression that distinguishes one person fro another or makes each person unique Conformity – Obeying or agreeing with some given standard or authority Vocabulary - 2 Garment – an article of wearing apparel Accessories – the articles added to complete or enhance outfits Style – identified by distinct features that create the overall appearance. Fashion – currently popular style of objects or activities Design – a particular or unique version of a style because of an original or individual arrangement of parts, form, color, fabric, line, or texture. Vocabulary - 2 Mass Fashion – produced in large quantities Avant-garde – daring & wild designs Taste – prevailing opinion of what is attractive and appropriate for a given person and occasion. Fad – Temporary, passing fashion. Classic – fashion that tends to be popular over an extended period of time High Fashion – latest and newest fashion Fashion Look – total accessorized outfit
