2 Communication Communication is the sending and receiving of a message. Communication can occur between one or many different people. Communication can take place within just one individual. This type of communication is called intrapersonal communication. Interpersonal communication involves two or more people. 3 Types of Communication Intrapersonal communication refers to the conversation that is continually going on in your own mind. Interpersonal communication refers to the different types of verbal, non-verbal and physical actions or expressions that people use when they communicate with each other. Mastering the two basic types of communication is the key to successful socialization. The ability to communicate ideas, thoughts and feelings serves as the basis for all successful human interaction. 4 Today we will focus on Intrapersonal Communication, the skills required to have effective intrapersonal communication, and ways that we can enhance those skills. 5 communications that occur within a person's own mind. 4 Factors that influence intrapersonal communication: Perspective positive internal dialogue, occurring within the mind. Meditation, prayer, visualization and affirmations are amongst the intrapersonal techniques. the process of talking to oneself, we all have constant internal dialogues going on within ourselves either consciously or subconsciously. Self-esteem a confidence and satisfaction in oneself Self-confidence the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance assuredness in one’s own powers and abilities Self-assertion expressing or defending your rights, claims, or opinions in a confident or forceful way 6 Our perspective is a view or belief which we truly believe is true and valuable in our life • Perspective is the way we look at things • Knowledge, understanding, and values in our minds shape our perspectives, philosophies, or standards When You Change the Way You Look at Things, the Things You Look at Change. 7 The way we think influences our perspectives in life Positive thoughts will produce positive perspectives Positive perspectives will produce positive actions Positive perspectives will also produce positive communication and interpersonal relationships What You See Depends Not Only on What You Look at, but Also on Where You Look From 8 What Shapes our Perspective? Religion/Church Media Life Experiences Family Modern Culture Social Observation 10 EVERY ACTION WE TAKE IS ACTUALLY A REFLECTION OF OUR PERSPECTIVE •The way we use our time, money, and energy •With whom we normally socialize or get along with •What kind of food we eat •What kind of books we read •What kind of activities we give priorities •How we communicate with people •How we react and take actions when we are facing difficulties and problems 11 HOW WE LOOK AT OURSELVES: In a positive or negative manner… In the form of strengths or the form of weaknesses….. With appreciating our capabilities or undermining ourselves…. With the feeling that we can be successful or feeble; with or without energy…. 12 Solid and good self-esteem will give us strength to shape our lives the best we can Poor and bad self-esteem will lead to a lot of weaknesses and doubt in life WHO AM I? The answer to this question will influence one’s self-esteem and influence the actions we take in our life 13 Am I a good human being? Am I a responsible: person/son/student/friend? Am I a loving: person/son/student/friend? Am I a productive member of society? Am I accountable and loyal? Do I look for the positive in all situations? 14 Recognize and embrace your positive qualities Trust that you are competent Interact with those who have positive minds, and who always encourage positive actions Take positive actions which bring goodness to yourself and society Find something exceptional in each day 15 a feeling of trust in one's abilities, qualities, and judgment. High self-confidence will help us take actions based on the perspectives and values we hold High self-confidence gives us the strength we need to achieve the goals we set in our life 16 You must know that you: can be successful, have talent and capabilities, can contribute something meaningful to society Do not compare yourself to others You must not be afraid to give opinions You must try to get small things done until successful Because small success can lead to bigger success You must try to do high risk work – which is challenging even though you may make mistakes or you don’t feel as though you have much to say So as to train yourself to fight feelings of being scared or lacking confidence You must have clear objectives, clear values, clear ways of doing things Do not worry about complaints, negative comments and opinions of other people – go ahead with your work – do it the best possible way you can 17 Seek support from positive, successful people not those who are only talkers, with no accomplishments; negative people who don’t like to see other people become successful. Be careful in choosing friends do not be affected by the negative comments and attitudes of sour people Prolonged exposure to negative elements will influence your mind and soul, and you will fall into the cycle of negativity Get yourself used to doing healthy work to build strong mind, soul, and character so that this way you will not be easily influenced by negativity or bad behavior – you give yourselve more confidence and become more useful. You must try to fight feelings of shame or fear Do not offer other people to volunteer You must offer your own self to volunteer to take part You must try to think of and find creative ways to solve problems do not surrender to circumstances 18 The ability to take a stand and take appropriate actions in defending perspectives and positive values which you strongly believe Determination, patience, and courage are the only things needed to improve any situation 19 Ways to build self-assertiveness Understand clearly the good and bad aspects of anything Be firm when others try to take advantage of you or persuade you Behold strictly to values, ethics, and rules which you strongly believe 20 Developing effective intrapersonal communication takes discipline and a willingness to slow down your day enough to hear your own thoughts. With time, an effective intrapersonal communication strategy can help you better shape your daily tasks and remain calm and effective in hectic situations. • Nobody will be able to change you to get better results, except you yourself. • For things to change, we have to change first. • Good news: once we start changing ourselves, things will start to change for us. • Our life is our responsibility, so we are responsible totally for our life. 21 Next week we will discuss the importance of Interpersonal Communication and its related skills. 22
