Business Law and Society Study Guide Ms. Bridget Lavender August 14, 2015 1. Civil Disobedience- an open peaceful, violation of law to protest its alleged, or supposed, injustice. 2. Scofflaws- Unethical, lawbreaking behavior. These people do not respect the law at all 3. Ethics- a practice of deciding what is right or wrong in a reasoned, impartial manner. 4. Stare decisis- let the decision stand. It requires the lower courts must follow established case law in deciding similar cases. 5. Ordinance- pieces of legislation created by a town or city council or by a county board or commission. 6. Constitution- a document that sets forth the framework of a government and its relationship to the people it governs. 7. Equity- fairness 8. King Hammurabi- he set law codes and placed law into sections such as: criminal law, property law, business law, family law, personal injury law, labor laws and other. 9. Administrative agencies- governmental bodies formed to carry out particular laws. 10. Civil law- the group of laws that allows individuals to seek legal remedies for wrongs done to them. 11. Torts- Private wrongs against people or organizations 12. Crime- an offense against society rather than individuals 13. Procedural law- sets forth how rights and responsibilities can be legally exercised and enforced through the legal system. 14. Substantive law- Rights and duties. It is concerned with all rules of conduct except those involved in enforcement. 15. There are 2 types of procedural law: civil procedure and criminal procedure 16. Fidelity bond- an insurance policy that pays the employer money in the case of theft by employees. 17. Business law- covers rules that apply to business situations and transaction.
