Potowmack Elementary - After School Program (ASP) 2016 Spring Session Online Registration begins on Tuesday, February 1st at 9:00 p.m. and end on Tuesday, March 1st at 9:00 p.m. Registration and class information can be found on our Potowmack Elementary website - go to the PTA link and click on "activities." Before you register: Create or Update your account at: https://www.pay4schoolstuff.com. Please update your student's information, especially their current grade level. This is very important with helping the registration process work smoothly. You can create or update your account at any time. How to Register: o o o o o All classes are registered online by logging onto your Pay4SchoolStuff account Click the red "select" button next to the student that you wish to register for ASP Click the red "select" button next to ASP Class (You need to register for each class separately.) You will be directed to the available ASP classes. Note: The number of available spaces left in the class will be displayed. Click the select box for any class in which your student is interested. Then click on the "Add to Cart" button at the bottom of the page. Proceed to payment page You will need to complete this process for each ASP class separately, so that the registrations are placed correctly. If you do not have access to a computer, please send an email to PotowmackASP@gmail.com as soon as possible. Class size is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Confirmation of Registration: Confirmation letters will come home via the email provided on your account at https://www.pay4schoolstuff.com. Please send an email to PotowmackASP@gmail.com if you did not receive your email confirmation by Friday, March 4th. Scholarships: Scholarships are available for families who cannot afford the enrollment fee for ASP classes. Scholarship requests forms are available in the school office. You can also send an email to PotowmackASP@gmail.com for an electronic copy. Completed forms can be placed in the PTA Box in front office. The Scholarship form must be submitted to Mrs. Rule for approval by Monday, February 15th. NO EXCEPTIONS Volunteer Opportunities - An On Site Coordinator (OSC) must be present each day that the After School Program classes are offered. Coordinator duties include taking attendance before class starts, check on absentee students and making sure all students are signed out by their parent or authorized person. As an OSC, one of your children will receive one FREE class. If a coordinator is unable to be present, all classes for that day will be canceled. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS. Classes begin the week of March 14th and end on April 28th (unless otherwise noted). **ASP classes will not be held if Loudoun County Schools are closed due to holidays or inclement weather. In the event of a school closing, we will make every effort to schedule a make-up class. Only one make up class will be given in the event of a closure beyond our control. Classes all meet from 2:40 PM - 3:40 PM (unless otherwise noted). An 8-student minimum is required to have a class (unless otherwise noted). Once the class starts, there will be NO REFUNDS. At that point instructors have already invested their resources into their class. Parents are responsible for the transportation of all students who participate. Bus transportation is NOT provided. CASA and YMCA students are welcome to participate and will be walked over to CASA and YMCA after ASP class. Chess can help kids with critical thinking skills. Fun-filled hour will be taught to students with competitive edge. Lego will be using the WeDo Software with more building and programming. WeDo is a fantastic, simple-touse tool that enables students to learn, construct and then bring their models to life. WeDo improves communication, collaboration and team building skills through the awesomeness of building with Lego and then programming your build to move! It will be great fun. Students will practice 5 fitness test that measure flexibility, agility, muscular strength, muscular endurance and cardio-respiratory endurance. Shirts will be awarded to those students that pass all 5 of the fitness tests. A medal will be awarded to those that do not pass all the fitness tests. We will also learn and play Cooperative & team sport activities (Kingdom, Flag Football, 4 Squares and other PE class activities). Hands on class to decorate delicious cupcakes with colorful patterns and designs. Learn to design flowers like a pro, create animals and sports themed cupcakes. Each class will have a different design and will include 2 or more cupcakes that the student can work on and take home. In this class, students will be playing fun games while learning new skills and new friends. A different sport will be covered each week with games to complement what the students have learned. Come join us for an hour of FUN!! The class will practice greetings, days of the week, months of the year, colors, counting to 20, family names, through songs, activities, games and visuals. Students will learn about colors, textures, painting and drawing. The children will recreate famous pieces of Art by creating crafts relating to these class topics. Join Mrs. Arthur's Reader's Theater Club, where students will read a story aloud, like a play, without memorization, props or stage. Gives students an outlet for creative expression and a safe platform for building reading confidence. As part of our book club, we will read a different book each week at home. Some of the books we will read include Class Dismissed by Allan Woodrow and Mountain Dog by Magarita Engel. We will also read books by National Geographic writer Jill Esbaum. During our weekly sessions, we will have the opportunity to Skype with these authors and ask them questions about their books. All book club members must be willing to read a chapter book each week at home in order to be prepared for the book discussions. Students will learn about Physicists, Abigail Atom, electrical power, atom behavior, color spectrum, the solar system and also magnetism. Students will learn this information through activities, images and simple elementary experiments. Students will learn about lift, thrust, gravity, drag, Bernoulli’s principle and more. In the coding class the students get introduced to basic programming as they create interactive stories, design animations, and make minigames using online game-like interface.
