Preseason and Try-outs:
Pre-season begins on WEDNESDAY, August 14th and will end on Wednesday,
August 21st. The teams will be decided after the morning practice on Wednesday, Aug
21st. We will be having 2-a-days for the first couple of days to help with the team
selection. Morning practices will consist of conditioning and skills and evening practices
will consist of drills and game like games.
Morning Practices: 8-10:30am
Afternoon/Evening Practices: 4-6:30pm
Wednesday, August 21st will be the final day of tryouts—morning practice that day
will be the final tryout practice, from 8-10:30AM, and we will make final decisions about
cuts and/or team placement after the morning practice. The teams will be posted
outside the Athletic Office lobby; as well each girl will get a packet with their respected
team information inside. Wednesday afternoon/evening practices will be with your
respective team (and there may be changes in practice times at that point depending on
each team’s schedule).
Preseason practice schedule:
August 14th: 8-10:30am and 4-6:30pm
August 15th: 8-10:30am and 4-6:30pm
August 16th: 8-10:30am and 4-6:30pm
August 19th: 8-10:30am and 4-6:30pm
August 20th: 8-10:30am and 4-6:30pm
August 21st: 8-10:30am and afternoon/evening practice with your respected team
Pre-season attendance: All players are required to attend a minimum of 7 practices
by the end of tryouts on August 21st (morning and evening practices are each
considered separate practices). However, we highly encourage you to attend ALL of the
practices. Players will be excused on a case-by-case basis, so please contact us to
determine whether you will be excused. Please try to plan your schedule to avoid
missing practices. If, for any reason, you are going to miss try-out practices please
inform us in advance. NOTE: Not having required items turned in is not an
acceptable excuse to miss tryouts.
Each player must bring their equipment to every practice. Equipment includes field
hockey stick, running shoes, cleats/turf shoes, shinguards, water bottle and MOST
IMPORTANTLY a mouthguard. Every player MUST have a mouthguard at every
practice in order to participate. They can be purchased at most sporting goods stores
for about $2-3. According to the rules of our leagues the mouthguard must be a color,
it cannot be clear. Not having a mouthguard is not an acceptable excuse for missing
tryouts. The University of Michigan Dental School also holds a free clinic during which
you can get a molded mouthguard made (call the School of Dentistry Information, (734)
763-6933, for more information and the date when the clinic is held). We will have
some extra sticks and shinguards available to be borrowed during preseason for those
who want to wait until after cuts are made to purchase their own. If you are a returning
player and have an extra stick, please bring it to lend to newcomers trying out for the
team. Each player should also bring their own water bottle to each practice.
Team Selection:
The field hockey team will consist of a maximum of 60 players, divided into a varsity
squad and one or two JV squads. Depending on how many players try out for the team
this year, we may have two small JV teams, or one larger JV team. This will be decided
once we know how many players are trying out, and we will keep everyone informed as
soon as this decision is made.
Team Selections based on:
During preseason, the coaches will be assessing each player’s attitude, coachability,
effort, fitness and skill. These factors will be considered when deciding if a player has
made the team, and if so, on which team she will be placed. Any significant changes in a
player’s attitude, effort, or skill can always result in the possibility of mobility between
teams, either upward or downward. The best players no matter their grade,
previous team experience will make the varsity and junior varsity teams. This
year is a new year so each girl needs to show the coaches why they deserve to make
varsity or junior varsity.
Criteria for Making Varsity and JV Teams:
 Attendance at a minimum number of preseason practices is required (as
described above); exceptions for extreme/unusual circumstances may be made
at the discretion of the coaches.
 SKILL: your skill level and your potential skill that will develop this preseason
and season
 EFFORT: how hard do you work...do you give 110% every day and push yourself
to improve...do you work on your individual skills on your own time...do you
cheat on the runs/workouts when you think the coaches can’t see you?
 ATTITUDE: do you listen to the coaches...are you willing to try new skills we
teach...are you respectful to all of the coaches and your teammates?
 CONDITIONING: your level of conditioning and how much it improves during
preseason, can you pass the fitness test?
Depending on the number of players we have tryout for the team, Varsity will likely
consist of 18-20 players, JV Green of 18-20 players, and JV Gold of 20-22 players (these
numbers are estimates).
Eligibility for returning Huron players: Please remember, you must pass at least 5
classes AND have a 2.0 GPA from the spring term to be eligible to play a Fall sport. If you
do not meet these minimum academic requirements, you will need to take summer
school to bring your grades up, or you will not be eligible to play on the field hockey
team (you can call the athletic office if you are unsure of your athletic eligibility or have
questions about summer school). Due to the marking period schedule, if you are still
considered ineligible from Spring 2013 when school starts in the Fall, you will not be
eligible to participate in a Fall sport at all—please check your grades before the summer
to make sure that you have ample time to meet the eligibility requirements before Fall.

Form requirements for pre-season
Before the first day of pre-season (Wednesday, August 14th), each player MUST have
the following fees and forms completed (and signed) and on file with the Athletic Office:
 2013-2014 “Ann Arbor Huron High School Athletic Medical Record” form
 “High School Athletic Participation Fees and Letter of Understanding” form
 Green “Medical Treatment Consent” card
 $30 Benefit Fee
 Pay-to-Participate Fee (TBD)
The Athletic Office will not be open in the morning before practice begins on
August 8th, so forms and fees should be turned in to the Athletic Office (NOT to
the coaches) by Tuesday, August 13th. It would be a good idea to call the office at
(734) 994-2075 to make sure that someone will be there when you arrive. Each
year we have players come to practice on the first day (including returners who
know better!) expecting to be able to play without a physical, you will NOT be
allowed to practice if these 2013-2014 forms & fees are not on file. Also, the
first four items listed above must be on file before you can participate in
any Huron field hockey summer workouts (the $150 participation fee does
not need to be turned in to participate in summer workouts). Required
forms may be picked up at the Athletic Office.
For those having trouble getting a doctor’s appointment for their physical, Concentra
(3131 S. State St., Suite 100; 213-6285) offers clinic physicals for $25. Concentra is open
Monday-Friday from 8:00am to 6:00pm.
