Introduction to the narrator, Elie and his family.
They live in a little town called Sighet. He wants to
study religion with his teacher, Moshe the Beadle.
Despite feeling confident that the Russians will
defeat the Germans, the Germans invade Sighet. The
Jews are forced into a “ghetto” and then taken to a
concentration camp to die.
