Choose ONE from the following topics:
1. Examine Nick's values. How are these similar to or different from the values of the other
characters? What is Fitzgerald saying about this contrast? You may wish to consider the contrast in
East vs. West in the novel as well.
2. Some critics have written that the most important theme of The Great Gatsby is the corruption of the
American Dream. What is meant by the phrase "American Dream" and how does the novel reflect its
corruption? Be sure to explain what the American Dream was originally and what it became in the
novel. You may want to consider the characters of Gatsby, George and Myrtle as examples of victims
of this corrupt dream.
3. Do a close analysis of the last page of the novel. What is Fitzgerald saying about the past? About
American history?
4. Look at the people who attend Gatsby's funeral. Who are they? Who does not come? What
comment is Fitzgerald making through this contrast?
5. Compare Nick and Gatsby. One critic compared them in the following way: “Nick’s mind is
conservative and historical, as is his lineage; Gatsby’s is radical and apocalyptic – as rootless as his
heritage. Nick is too immersed in time and reality; Gatsby is hopelessly out of it. Nick is always
withdrawing, while Gatsby pursues the green light. Nick can’t be hurt, but neither can he be happy.
Gatsby can experience ecstasy, but his fate is necessarily tragic.” In your essay, use specific evidence
to defend (this statement is correct), challenge (this statement is not correct), or qualify (some parts
of this statement are correct, but some are not) this description of the characters.
6. Choose three symbols and argue that these three symbols support one of the novel’s themes. You
will need to understand and choose an appropriate and viable theme.
7. It has been suggested that, in many great novels, the hero or heroine must be sacrificed in order for
the other characters to attain some greater truth. Think about who gains what by Gatsby’s death,
what the other characters do or do not learn at the expense of Gatsby, and what is gained and/or lost
by his demise. Does Gatsby have to die in this novel?
8. Who is ultimately responsible for the fate of Jay Gatsby?
