DAYSPRING PERFORMS THE MUSICAL OLIVER!
(MOUNTVILLE, PA) – On Friday, April 25, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 26, at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.,
Dayspring students will perform the musical Oliver! in the school auditorium.
Oliver! is based on Charles Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist. It takes place in the 1830s in England. Within the
show there are eight outstanding musical numbers.
Oliver! is about the hardships a young orphan boy named, Oliver Twist goes through. He starts off living in a
workhouse with other orphaned boys. When he is kicked out of the workhouse, Oliver is sold to an
undertaker. Once again, Oliver is treated poorly, so he runs away. On the streets, he meets a young boy who
takes him to his home, which is an academy for orphans to learn to pick-pocket. On his first pick-pocketing
job, Oliver is caught, but the man Oliver stole from decides to allow Oliver to live with him because he learns
about Oliver’s sad past. Just when things are starting to look up for Oliver, more bad events occur.
“Dayspring’s curriculum is based on the classical form of education.” said teacher advisor of Oliver!, Angela
Adams. “We loved the Biblical principles we saw played out by the characters. Nancy, though a tainted
character, lays down her life for Oliver.” Adams stated that Oliver! is a good reminder of James 1:27,
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this; to look after orphans and widows in their
distress and to keep oneself from being polluted from the world.”
