What is the Fortress of Louisbourg?
The Fortress of Louisbourg is the location of a one-quarter
partial reconstruction of an 18th-century French fortress at
Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.
History of Louisbourg
The original settlement was founded in 1713 by the French and
developed into a popular center fishing and trade. As they fought
against the threat of British invasion, Louisbourg was besieged
twice before finally being destroyed in the 1760s. It became the
largest reconstruction project in North America.
What is the Fortress of Louisbourg used
for?
Today they are using what remains of 18century inventories to
provide the Fortress of Louisbourg’s visitors the chance to eat
like the ancestors did hundreds of years ago. Chefs make the
lower-class French meals like pea soup, meat pie, and fish of the
day made from recipes over very long time.
The Acadians
Geo Assignment
Michelle Gr.9
Who were the Acadians?
The Acadians were the descendants of the original French
settlers and often Métis, of parts of Acadia in the
northeastern region of North America.(now the Canadian
Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince
Edward Island, Gaspé, in Quebec, and to the Kennebec River in
southern Maine.)
Why did they come to Canada?
Acadians decided to leave France to have a better
environment.
How did they make a living?
The early Acadian settlers were mostly farmers. To work on the farms, the Acadians drained the marshes
along bays and rivers by building dykes and aboiteaux to keep sea water out. After two years, when the sea
salt was wasted out by snow and rain, they could plant their crops on the new farmland.
In every spring, the men repaired the old dykes and built new ones to gain more land. They planted their
crops and kept their cattle. They often traded with the New Englanders. They got household items, sugar,
molasses, machinery and other things they needed from the New Englanders, and they gave what they
didn’t need. Over the winter, the men and older boys cut firewood and household’s furniture. They could
make some simple furniture such as tables, chairs, beds, cradles and sideboards with the woods.
The women did chores in their houses such as cooking, laundries,
making the family’s clothes, milking the cows, feeding the chickens and
tending the vegetable gardens. They kept sheep for their wool.
They could make some clothes, blankets, socks and stockings with the wool.
They also grew hemp and flax, which they wove into linen for clothes as well.
