Effort and Achievement If I work hard, will my grades go up? Those Report Cards DEAR TEACHER: My son gets grades in every one of his content classes. One grade is for achievement but the other grade is for his effort. I am not sure about which grade I should be most concerned? Are both important? A Worried LEMS Parent The Answer Dear Worried Parent: The grades are for different things. The achievement grade says how well your son knows the content. The effort grade shows how hard your son is working during class, how much he is participating in class discussions and if he is completing homework assignments. The answer continued… You should look at how the two grades work together. When he gets a good grade in effort, is he getting a good grade in achievement? Probably so! Or, if he has a poor grade in effort, is his achievement grade low? Also, yes. Encourage his efforts! I study my vocabulary words 0-1 times a week and read less than 20 minutes outside of school. Pride: I feel satisfied when I demonstrate my vocabulary knowledge. I have tried my hardest and should receive above a 90% on my vocabulary quiz. I have worked hard and should receive above an 80% on my vocabulary quiz. I studied some and should receive above a 70% on my vocabulary quiz. I haven’t studied much and expect to receive below a 70%. Without setting goals, you are never sure of your target. You will now select 3 learning goals and place them in your PowerPoint. Keeping track of your efforts and achievement. For the next 4 weeks, you will keep track of your efforts on learning vocabulary words using a spreadsheet. You will use the Effort and Achievement rubric to evaluate your personal effort. You will also record your vocabulary quiz grades and amount of time reading on this spreadsheet. Download spreadsheet Vocabulary You will study frequently used word “parts.” These “parts” are: prefixes (added in front of the word) suffixes (added at the end of the word). When prefixes or suffixes are added to base words, the meaning of the base words are changed. By learning word “parts,” you can figure out the meaning of many new words. Weekly Score Sheet Reading to improve Vocabulary Not only will effort toward studying vocabulary words improve your achievement, so will reading!
